Under the direction of the Clinical Director of Post-Surgical Unit/ED/Float Pool, the Clinical Nurse Coordinator is responsible for overseeing the daily operations, staff, and quality of patient care in the Post-Surgical Unit and ED departments, including the Float Pool Department. The Clinical Nurse Coordinator ensures that the highest standards of care, safety, and efficiency are maintained. This role is accountable for improving departmental flow, promoting shared governance, and enhancing communication throughout the team. The Clinical Nurse Coordinator acts as a resource for staff, provides leadership for clinical operations, and ensures quality patient care delivery by assisting with staffing, training, and scheduling while taking patient assignments as needed. The Clinical Nurse Coordinator collaborates closely with other department leadership to ensure optimal patient outcomes and aligns departmental objectives with the hospital’s strategic nursing goals.

Supervises: Charge RNs, Staff RNs, Medical Assistants (MAs), Hospital Unit Coordinators, and Patient Care Technicians (PCTs).

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Provides leadership, guidance, and evaluation of staff performance, including participation in employee evaluations and ongoing coaching
  • Assists with hiring of new staff, new employee orientation, education, and staff competency assessments
  • Oversees daily staffing and coordinates shift coverage to maintain productivity goals and ensure optimal patient flow
  • Participates in employee development, including identifying educational needs and supporting professional growth
  • Ensures department adherence to regulatory standards (TDSHS, CMS, Joint Commission AORN, ASPAN, TXBON) and organizational policies
  • Promotes a positive work environment, motivates staff, and leads by example to maintain high morale and effective teamwork
  • Addresses and resolves conflicts or issues that arise, ensuring service excellence and patient satisfaction.
  • Promotes a culture of collaboration and accountability, maintaining high morale, resolving conflicts, and motivating staff toward professional growth.

Required Skills

Education:

  • Graduate of an accredited professional school of nursing required.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.

Licensure/Certification:

  • Current Texas RN License
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certifications (must be obtained within 60 days of hire)

Specific Job Experience:

  • Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in Progressive Care/Intermediate Care/Critical Care nursing required, with demonstrated leadership skills
  • Previous supervisory experience preferred
  • Strong knowledge of hospital policies and procedures specific to the post-surgical and ED departments preferred
