Pre-Call Registered Nurse at Surgical Institute of Reading
The Pre-Call Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for completing comprehensive preoperative telephone assessments and coordination activities to ensure patients are clinically prepared, informed, and cleared for their scheduled surgical procedures. The Pre-Call RN serves as a critical patient safety and readiness checkpoint, collaborating closely with anesthesia providers, surgeons, Pre-Admission Testing (PAT), and perioperative teams while supporting the philosophy, objectives, and goals of the Facility.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Conducts comprehensive preoperative telephone screenings with patients who are not scheduled for in-person PAT visits.
- Reviews surgical schedules and patient charts to identify required pre-call assessments and outstanding clinical or administrative needs.
- Performs nursing assessments via telephone, including review of medical history, medications, allergies, prior surgical and anesthesia history, and current health status.
- Identifies high-risk findings and appropriately escalates concerns to anesthesia and/or the PAT Coordinator for review and determination of surgical readiness.
- Reviews physician and anesthesia preoperative orders to ensure required testing, clearances, and documentation are obtained prior to the day of surgery.
- Coordinates and follows up on outstanding labs, diagnostic testing, medical clearances, and specialist documentation.
- Provides individualized preoperative education, including instructions related to medications, NPO status, arrival times, postoperative expectations, and patient rights and responsibilities.
- Confirms procedure details and verifies patient understanding of the planned surgery.
- Ensures accurate, timely, and complete documentation of all pre-call assessments and communications in the medical record according to facility policy.
- Assists with rescheduling procedures of PAT visits when clinical concerns, missing requirements, or patient needs are identified.
- Collaborates with PAT, anesthesia, surgeons’ offices, scheduling, and perioperative teams to promote safe, efficient surgical flow.
- Maintains patient confidentiality, dignity, and privacy in all interactions.
- Demonstrates knowledge of and responsiveness to emergency situations, including appropriate escalation of clinical findings identified during pre-call assessments.
- Reports incidents and completes required documentation related to patient, visitor, or employee events.
- Participates in staff meetings, education, performance improvement activities, and mandatory training programs
- Assist with related PAT or chart preparation functions as directed and within RN Scope of practice.
Qualifications:
- Licensure as Registered Nurse in the State Pennsylvania.
- Current BLS certification
- Previous experience in perioperative nursing, Pre-Admission Testing, or acute care preferred.
- Strong clinical assessment, critical thinking, and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with interdisciplinary teams.
