- Under the supervision of the Medical Director and Chief Nurse Officer, the Laboratory Director serves as the responsible leader for all laboratory services. Ensures the delivery of quality, safe, and effective laboratory services. Is responsible for short- and long-term planning, resource management, and oversight of regulatory compliance.

2. Supports exceptional hospital clinical outcomes and patient safety using knowledge of applicable TJC and CLIA standards and/or regulations.
3. Responsible for the quality and safety of laboratory services.
4. Ensures there are no lapses in quality control and proficiency testing. If issues are identified, a plan of correction is developed and implemented.
5. Ensures the quality of specimens, testing methods, or results are not jeopardized.
6. Monitors and evaluates the record systems to verify they well organized and current.
7. Monitors test analyses to ensure that acceptable levels of analytic performance are maintained.
8. Delegates duties to technical consultants to maintain competence of all individuals who are involved in laboratory processes including specimen collection and processing, Point of Care Testing, blood inventory.
9. Responsible for ensuring compliance with all regulatory agencies including CLIA (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act of 1988) regulations and The Joint Commission Standards.
10. Must be accessible to the laboratory to provide onsite, telephone, or electronic consultation as necessary.
11. Approves current reference intervals (normal values).
12. The laboratory director requires that each staff member demonstrate competency and the ability to perform all duties before actually testing patient specimens.
13. Determines qualifications of each laboratory staff member.
14. Retains records of participation in a proficiency testing program.
15. The laboratory director approves all laboratory policies and documents such approval every two years and as needed when process changes occur.
16. Assists with the coordination of the laboratory accreditation and regulatory survey activity.
17. Leads performance improvement efforts related to laboratory services.
18. Leads the implementation and monitoring of hospital plans of correction, reporting variances or deviation from accreditation standards.
19. Ability to analyze complex data, identify trends, and collaboratively build action plans which proactively resolve risk factors.
20. Demonstrates ability to develop, maintain and produce reports related to laboratory performance.
21. Assists with performing accurate tracking, aggregating, trending, analysis and creating reports for performance improvement and regulatory activities.
22. Promotes a safe work environment for self and others. This includes but is not limited to identifying and responding to actual or potentially unsafe conditions and by using applicable safe work practices.
23. The position requires advanced leadership skills. These leadership skills include role modeling, coaching and monitoring to develop staff. The employee also has consultation skills to collaborate with nursing management, other departments, and professionals within the hospital as well as in the community.
24. Within scope of job, requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a fast paced environment, and take appropriate action. Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required.

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responsible for the quality and safety of all laboratory services including but not limited to quality control testing and proficiency testing.
Responsible for identifying and prioritizing opportunity for improvement and development of action plans related to laboratory services including but not limited to the implementation processes for new laboratory equipment and services.
Responsible for overall competency of laboratory staff. Tasks related to competency of staff may be delegated to technical consultants.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, COMPETENCIES, QUALIFICATIONS and EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- Education: Bachelor of Science in Biological Science or Clinical Laboratory Science.
- Licensure:
- Experience: A minimum of 2 years of laboratory supervisory experience. May be responsible for no more than five (5) CLIA certificates.
- Required Certification:
- Recommended Certification: MLS ASCP or MT ASCP certification
- Special Skills: Strong interpersonal and leadership skills are required. Effective verbal and written communication skills. Knowledgeable of applicable laws, guidelines, & regulations relevant to the laboratory.
- Other Abilities: Ability to get along well with other people/coworkers/patients. Ability to project a positive team attitude. Steady attendance. Flexibility in schedule. All other duties as assigned. Strong computer skills, and data analysis and statistical skills.
- Mental Abilities: Must be able to comprehend policies, patient records, physician’s orders, procedures and guidelines and communicate pertinent information. Requires flexibility to multitask and adjust to changes in priorities.
- Working conditions:
· Will be working in a clean, well-lighted area.
· Hazards & Risks: Direct patient contact with possible exposure to infectious agents &/or communicable diseases.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
1. Physical Abilities: May be asked to exert at least 25 pounds of force to assist with supplies and equipment. Frequent standing, bending and stooping involved. Sitting at computer for extended periods.
2. Hazards and Risks: Direct patient contact with possible exposure to communicable diseases.
