Job Summary - Director of Pharmacy Service :

Interprets physician prescriptions and medication orders. Assures the safe and appropriate use of drugs for patients of this hospital. Acts as a drug information resource person to patients, medical staff, nursing staff, and ancillary department personnel. Supervises staff Pharmacists, Pharmacy Techs, and other Pharmacy staff, Compounds and dispenses prescribed medications and other pharmaceuticals for patient care by performing the related duties. Actively participates in the department’s performance improvement activities. Co-leads the Antibiotic Stewardship Program. Is responsible for the presentation of antibiotic stewardship measures and outcomes to key members of the executive team and Medical Staff.

Job Description: 

  • Answers questions and provides information to physicians, nurses, patients, and other healthcare professionals on
    the appropriate use of medications, drug interactions, side effects, dosage, storage, etc.
  • Assists in teaching programs (departmental, medical, nursing, community).
  • Compounds medications using standard formulas and processes, such as measuring and mixing ingredients.
  • Consults with the Chief Nursing Officer on Pharmacy concerns and the interpretation of hospital polices to ensure patient
    needs are met.
  • Demonstrates ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as dosage calculations, formulation of
    pharmaceutical preparations, and data analysis.
  • Demonstrates ability to read, analyze, and interpret pharmacy-related journals.
  • Demonstrates ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or
    members of the hospital staff.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills to follow aseptic technique when compounding and other infection control
    procedures.
  • Develops, implements, and evaluates the department’s MERP Plan.
  • Directs Pharmacy Department personnel engaged in admixing, packaging, and labeling pharmaceuticals.
  • Ensures the maintenance and proper operation of equipment and supplies in the work areas.
  • Enters data into the computer system (Pharmacy program), such as patient, prescribed medications, and cost, and
    maintains patient profiles.
  • Inspects patient medications, narcotics, and other controlled substances for contamination, correct labeling, and
    expiration date prior to approving them for use within the Facility.
  • Instructs medical personnel on matters pertaining to the Pharmacy Department.
  • Maintains established procedures concerning medication quality control, security of controlled substances, and
    disposal of hazardous waste.
  • Maintains records on employee efficiency or productivity.
  • Manages the department's timekeeping system
  • Monitors all postings onto the patient profiles in order that accuracy, drug allergies, drug interactions, duplicate
    therapy, rational drug therapy, and incompatibilities may be realized, and better patient care received.
  • Possesses thorough knowledge of drugs, drug actions and interactions, manufacturing of those drugs,
    pharmaceutical calculations, pharmaceutical laws and regulations, including guidelines for compounding found in
    USP 797.
  • Stays current in the field of pharmacology through continuing education, seminars/conferences, professional
    societies, and journals.
  • Wears personal protective equipment as applicable.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Skills

Education and Work Experience: 

Current Pharmacist certification or licensure in the State of California.

Doctorate of Pharmacy degree or Bachelor of Science degree, or equivalent.

Graduated from an accredited School of Pharmacy.

Four years of hospital/retail pharmacy practice preferred.

One year of managerial experience preferred.

 

Required Licenses/Certification: 

Current Pharmacist certification or licensure in the State of California.

Salary range: $75.00 - $95.00 (Depending on Experience)
