Job Summary:   The RN Surgical Coordinator is responsible for coordinating and overseeing all aspects of surgical scheduling, preparation and execution within the perioperative department for the Orthopedic & Podiatry Service Lines at Doctors United Surgery Center. This role serves as a clinical resource for surgeons, surgical personnel, and vendors across the Orthopedic & Podiatry Service Lines. With a focus on efficiency, safety, fiscal stewardship, and quality of care, the RN Surgical Coordinator plays a vital role in optimizing patient outcomes and ensuring seamless surgical operations.

 

Job Duties:

 

·       Collaborates with surgeons, Director of Nursing, OR Charge Nurse, Materials Management, and vendors to ensure surgical cases are efficiently planned and executed, including vendor representation and medical staff availability.

·       Review assigned Orthopedic & Podiatry Service Line schedules to confirm the availability of appropriate resources and oversee and verify that Surgical Technologists have prepared all required instruments, equipment, and implants.

·       Participate in case planning, preference card management, and coordination of specialty service needs. Work closely with surgeons and perioperative staff regarding positioning, supplies, medications, and implants.

·       Serve as the primary point of contact for physicians and surgical staff in the Orthopedic & Podiatry Service Lines, effectively communicating and escalating specialty needs to leadership.

·       Identify capital equipment needs in collaboration with surgeons and perioperative staff and help coordinate in-services and training for OR personnel.

·       Partner with the Administrator to ensure fiscal responsibility, monitor utilization of resources, and help identify and implement cost-saving initiatives.

·       Assist in the development, implementation, and enforcement of policies, procedures, and standards of care in compliance with regulatory and accreditation requirements.

·       Provide mentorship and act as a clinical resource for OR Circulators and Surgical Technologists.

·       Help troubleshoot equipment and supply issues to minimize disruption to surgical schedules.

·       Maintain current knowledge of surgical techniques, instrumentation, and technology relevant to the Orthopedic & Podiatry Service Lines.

·       Participates in QAPI actives, PRO reporting to home office, and completing EDGE requirements. This may require coordination with QAPI program coordinator.

·       Promote teamwork, communication, and a culture of safety within the OR; actively participate in staff education, orientation, and competency assessments.

 


Required Skills

Qualifications:

  • Hold and maintain a current RN license in the state of Texas (or compact state eligibility).
  • Graduate of an accredited Nursing School. BSN preferred.
  • Minimum 3-5 years of perioperative nursing experience within a orthopedic or podiatry service line. Surgical coordinator and/or orthopedic or podiatry service line lead experience preferred.
  • In-depth knowledge of surgical instrumentation, equipment, and procedures across orthopedic and podiatry service lines.
  • Demonstrated leadership, organizational, and critical thinking skills.
  • Strong ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams in a fast-paced environment.
  • Current BLS and ACLS certification (or willingness to obtain prior to employment).
  • CNOR certification preferred.
  • Computer literacy skills with Microsoft Office Word and Excel documents are required.
  • Accepts and supports changes in work assignments related to schedule and patient needs
