This position reports to the registered nurse unit coordinator and manager/ director of surgery and is responsible for identifying specific needs of the patient and anesthesia care under the direct supervision of the anesthesia provider. The primary role of the anesthesia technician is to assist, supply, and maintain thorough knowledge on all anesthesia supplies and equipment needed prior, during and after surgical intervention.

Salary: $23.00 - $33.00 (Depending on Experience)

Hours: 5 x 8 hours


Required Skills

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Associates or BS degree in a healthcare field preferred or completion of in-house anesthesia technician training program preferred.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Two years of related experience.

Required License and Certifications

  • Certified Anesthesia Technician preferred through the National Certification Examination in Anesthesia Technology administered by the American Society of Anesthesia Technologists and Technicians preferred.
  • Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) certification preferred.

Essential Functions

  • Applies aseptic techniques in daily work assignments.
  • Performs general cleaning of department surface areas, racks, shelves, storage cabinets and all storage areas.
  • Reviews the OR schedule for special equipment needs.
  • Sets up OR for the anesthesiologist.
  • Assists Circulating RN move patient to OR table and to position patient.
  • Assists in room turn over to include wiping room, anesthesia cart, supplies and mopping
  • Assists the anesthesiologist with preparation of anesthesia equipment during turn over and room turnover.
  • Assists the nurse and anesthesiologist with the insertion of IVs and arterial lines and attaches arterial lines to transducers and calibrates monitors.
  • Checks all equipment, resuscitative supplies and agents to be used in the administration of the anesthesia to assure safe working order.
  • Ensures all warmers are stocked with blankets and fluids; monitors the warming cabinets throughout the shift.
  • May set-up other equipment such as blood warmers, hypothermia blanket, as needed
  • Performs tray assemblage, proper packaging and preparation of all applicable supplies for sterilization as needed.
  • Assists in opening sterile supplies and monitors sterility dates.
  • Reports all malfunctioning equipment to the Director of Surgical Services, OR Manager and OR Coordinator.
  • Communicates missing items or any issues to team immediately and prior to patient being brought to the Operating Room.
  • Ensures items needed “Flashed or Sterilized” are ready for “To Follow” cases
  • Ensures next case is prepared and all items are available for “To Follow” cases
  • Maintains PAR levels of anesthesia supplies; orders supplies as needed; communicates supply issues to anesthesia personnel.
  • Responsible for assisting with the cleaning and processing of surgical equipment on an as needed basis during levels of high surgical productivity.
  • Responsible for the cleaning of anesthesia equipment.
  • Patients are safely transported in surgical gurneys and remain covered in blankets.
  • Transports blood gases and other blood specimens to the Clinical Laboratory.
  • Other duties as assigned.
