Lead Sterile Processing Technician and Assistant Materials Manager

Job Summary: The Lead Sterile Processing Tech and Assistant Materials Manager will play a pivotal role in ensuring the efficient operation of the surgical services department. This position is responsible for providing expert sterile processing techniques while managing and coordinating the inventory of surgical supplies and equipment in collaboration with the Materials Manager. The Lead Sterile Technician will report directly to the Operating Room Manager and will oversee sterile processing activities, assist in training, and support materials management tasks to ensure that the operating room is well-equipped and organized for all surgical procedures.

Key Responsibilities:

Sterile Technician Duties:

  • The Sterile Processing Technician cares for and maintains all surgical instrumentation and sets up supplies and instruments for surgery cases.
  • The Lead Sterile Processing Tech is responsible for supervising and assisting with the cleaning and sterilizing of all items pertinent to the operations of the center. 
  • Makes decisions regarding sterilization department needs and communicates appropriate information to other team members and/or leaders.
  • Helps maintain equipment, supplies, and cleanliness of the unit as a whole. 
  • May have additional responsibilities as designed by the Clinical Director/Facility Administrator, which include, but are not limited to, serving on committees, participating in quality improvement audits, and projects

Materials Management Duties:

  •  Work in partnership with the Materials Manager to maintain and manage surgical supply inventory, ensuring adequate stock levels, accurate ordering, and proper storage of materials.
  •  Monitor the condition and expiration dates of supplies, and assist with the rotation of inventory to minimize waste and ensure availability.
  •  Participate in periodic inventory counts, receiving shipments, and ensuring that materials are stocked appropriately in the OR and supply rooms.
  •  Assist with tracking and documenting usage of surgical supplies and instruments, reporting any shortages or discrepancies to the Materials Manager.
  •  Ensure all equipment is properly maintained, cleaned, and serviced in coordination with the Materials Manager.

Team Leadership and Training:

  •    Act as the lead for a team of scrub technicians, providing guidance, mentorship, and support as needed.
  •    Assist in training new scrub technicians and ensure adherence to departmental policies and best practices.
  •    Provide ongoing education and in-service training to staff on the proper use of surgical instruments, materials, and aseptic techniques.

General Duties:

  •   Maintain a professional and positive working relationship with all surgical team members, contributing to a collaborative, efficient, and supportive environment.
  •   Ensure compliance with PSC/Corporate policies, regulatory standards, and safety protocols.
  •   Assist the Operating Room Manager in developing and improving departmental processes and procedures related to surgical support and materials management.

Qualifications:

  • Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician - CRCST (preferred)
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • BLS certification preferred.
  •  Preferred experience in materials management and inventory control, preferably in a healthcare setting.
  •  Strong knowledge of surgical instruments, procedures, and sterile techniques.
  •  Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  •  Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  •  Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  •  Leadership experience preferred, with the ability to mentor and train staff.

Physical Requirements:

  •  Ability to stand for extended periods of time, bend, lift, and carry up to 25 pounds.
  •  Ability to work in a fast-paced and high-stress environment with a focus on patient safety and comfort.

Work Environment:

  • The role is based in a surgical center's operating room, requiring close interaction with surgical teams and exposure to various surgical instruments and medical equipment.
