Pierce County Library 

Hiring Range: $21.02 - $23.67 hourly; Pay Grade Range: $21.02 - $29.11 hourly

Compensation

Pierce County Library System offers a compensation program which recognizes qualifications and experience relevant to each position. The starting pay is established typically within the hiring range below based upon the experience of the individual hired into the role. Our compensation package also includes annual increases for each additional year of experience and tenure in the role, up to the maximum (current year maximum outlined in pay grade range above). Eligibility for overtime is exclusive to positions which are FLSA status non-exempt below.

 

FLSA Status: Hourly, Non- Exempt

Position Status: Temporary - up to 90 days

Hours Per Week: 40

Location: Administrative Center and Library

Schedule:  

Monday-Friday: 8:300am-5:00pm.

*Schedule is subject to change.

Union Status: Non-Represented (Temporary)

Position Summary

Performs a variety of routine clerical and technical library functions; processes various types of library materials; assists in maintaining assigned library collections; performs data entry; prepares program materials; and performs other related duties as assigned.

 

Essential Functions 

Class specifications are intended to provide a descriptive list of the range of duties performed by employee in the class. Specifications are not intended to reflect all duties performed within the job.

• Delivers high-quality, customer-focused services.

• Processes various types of library materials including books and audiovisual items; attaches property stamps, labels, and book jackets.

• Enters materials information into the Polaris System including barcodes, item destinations, collection codes, and call numbers; reassigns items to other library branches under the guidance of the CM Librarians

• Prepares, receives, unpacks, sorts, and distributes assigned library materials, mail, and/or deliveries; reviews shipping documents for accuracy; operates forklifts and pallet jacks.

• Checks in and shelves library materials; organizes and maintains shelves; performs shelf reading; locates items and fills customer hold requests; unloads assigned book drops.

• Reviews library items for weeding; assists in cleaning library materials;

• Provides assistance in preparing, assembling, and distributing library programming materials including flyers, brochures, booklets, activity sheets, and/or other related items.

• Prepares and maintains Book Club kits for monthly distribution to the branches.

• Demonstrates punctuality and regular and consistent attendance. LIBRARY TECHNICIAN 2

• Brings matters of public concern regarding waste, inefficiency, corruption, discrimination, and safety to the attention of Library Management.

• Accurately communicates the Library’s policies to members of the public in all job-related contacts.

• Positively reflects Pierce County Library’s mission, vision, and values to members of the public and to staff.

• Performs other specialized duties relative to area of assignment as assigned or required.

Duties are considered non-essential and include the following:

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 

The employee is expected to perform or possess the following:

Minimum Requirements including Education, License or Certifications:

• High School Diploma or equivalent, and

• One (1) year public library/general office experience; OR

• Any combination of education and experience which would provide the required knowledge and skills and allows successful performance of the job.

• Depending on area of assignment, a valid Washington State Driver’s License may be required..

• After hire, the library will provide the necessary training to obtain WISHA Forklift Certification.

• Must pass criminal background screening prior to hire. LIBRARY TECHNICIAN 3

• The ability to work evenings and weekends on a rotating schedule and to adapt to schedule changes on short notice is required.

• Public library operations and services.

• Circulation processes and procedures.

Technology Requirements: 

Required:

• Ability to effectively navigate basic electronic record creation and storage (e.g. timecard/HRIS, performance review, network drive storage)

• Use of basic office equipment (e.g. PC, printer, phone, fax, mouse, security alarm)

• Basic keyboard and alpha/numeric data entry skills

• Basic PC navigation skills in a windows based environment; ability to connect and print

• Ability to navigate, search and use basic web functions and applications

• Understand and follow basic technical instruction

Desired:

• Basic MS Office Suite skills (e.g. Outlook, Word, Excel)

• Integrated Library System, Inventory or Data Management system experience

 

Physical and Environmental Conditions: 

Work is conducted in a normal office setting that provides comfortable lighting, temperature and air conditions. Occasional light lifting, such as three to four reams of paper, four or five books, or other library materials up to 35 pounds may be required. Subject to sitting and standing for extended periods of time, walking, bending, reaching, and lifting objects weighing up to 30-35 pounds. May lift or push up to 50-100 pounds as needed with assistance. LIBRARY TECHNICIAN 4

Work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts that require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices or meeting rooms, e.g. use of safe work place practices with office equipment, and/or avoidance of trips and falls and observance of fire regulations.

Work may be performed in a library environment and involve regular contact with the public, and/or require push/pull loaded carts.

Required Skills

  • Proficiency in library management systems and integrated library software (ILS)
  • Strong customer service and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to catalog and classify library materials using Dewey Decimal and Library of Congress systems
  • Familiarity with digital library resources, databases, and e-content platforms
  • Basic computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite and internet navigation
  • Ability to operate standard library equipment including scanners, printers, and self-checkout machines
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment as well as independently
  • Knowledge of library policies, procedures, and best practices
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to adapt to changing priorities
  • Bilingual or multilingual communication skills are a plus
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of patron records and information
  • Knowledge of community outreach and programming support

Required Experience

  • Previous experience working in a public library, academic library, or similar information services environment
  • Experience assisting patrons with reference inquiries and reader advisory services
  • Experience with circulation desk operations including check-in, check-out, and holds management
  • Experience using integrated library systems (ILS) such as SirsiDynix, Polaris, or similar platforms
  • Experience supporting library programs and community events
  • Experience with shelving, shelf reading, and maintaining organized library collections
  • Experience processing interlibrary loan requests is preferred
  • Experience working with diverse populations including children, seniors, and underserved communities
  • Experience in data entry and maintaining accurate records
  • Associate degree or higher in Library Technology, Library Science, or a related field preferred, or equivalent combination of education and experience
