The Clinical Pharmacist – Oncology Specialist shall assist and collaborate with the Pharmacy Team involving oncology and infusion medications. He/she shall work in conjunction with Pharmacy Technicians for auditing the performance of pharmacy processes and systems as required for maintenance and compliance with state, federal, and accreditation agencies. He/she shall help optimize selection of pharmacological agents that assist in achieving maximum therapeutic benefit while minimizing toxicity. He/she shall deliver care to patients as a part of the multi-disciplinary inpatient/outpatient oncology team, provide direct patient care contact to visually assess for signs of adverse effects, and manage the patient within the scope of practice. He/she shall provide education (on the use, storage, side effects, precautions, and supportive care medications) via verbal consultation and written material when deemed appropriate. He/she shall provide drug therapy management by consulting with the patient, patient’s caregivers, and healthcare team caring for the patient, perform follow-up care with appropriate patients at each visit when clinically necessary, monitor lab values, and provide recommendations on treatment delays or dose modifications when deemed clinically necessary. He/she shall be responsible for verifying accuracy and appropriateness of each chemotherapy order provided by physician and provide medication information/consultations to physicians and nurses based around the current literature, research, and best practices as requested. He/she shall collaboratively manage oncology protocols including but not limited to: chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting management, dose-rounding protocols, carboplatin per pharmacy, electrolytes, and per pharmacy adverse effect management (bowel, pain, etc). He/she shall be responsible for ensuring appropriate documentation, calculation and compounding of each chemotherapy and supportive care medication. He/she shall act as a mentor for others by providing visual, spoken, and written clinical education and training to pharmacy students, technicians, pharmacists, and residents in the Department of Pharmacy as needed. He/she shall work as a full-time employee and must work at least 50% of their time in a specialized area where they are developing and promoting best practice protocols, safe medication management process and quality assurance monitoring for the pharmacy practice in that area. He/she shall document activities in the progress notes of the patient’s medical record with goals of quantifying the impact of improvement of care to the patient and to help justify the financial benefits of their work. He/she shall provide training to the Pharmacy Team and other organizational employees as deemed appropriate. He/she shall compile reports and complete projects as assigned by Pharmacy Management adhering to deadlines. He/she shall produce research data and materials that can be shared with the professional healthcare community. He/she shall provide a collaborative multi-disciplinary role in the development, review and maintenance of practice agreements, policies, protocols, and order sets as it pertains to their specialty area.

Required Skills

  • Possess advanced knowledge pharmacokinetics and clinical knowledge as it pertains to oncology and the ability to apply them in the hospital setting. Possess the ability to critically think.
  • Possess knowledge of policies governing the use chemotherapeutic agents, medication related polices/protocols, evidence of continuous professional training in related field of work, excellent computer, verbal/written communications, and ability to prioritize is required.
  • With consideration to age, utilizes the approved process to resolve biophysical, psychological, educational, and environmental needs of patient/significant other when administering care.

Required Experience

  • Graduate of an accredited school of pharmacy recognized by the California State Board of Pharmacy, possess a PharmD degree, and be a California Registered Pharmacist.
  • Must have a current BCLS Healthcare Provider CPR Card from the American Heart Association.
  • Completion of a hospital residency and/or advanced certification in a pharmacy specialty area is preferred.
  • A minimum of two (2) years working experience as a California Registered Pharmacist in a hospital setting with clinical background in oncology.
  • Experience with design of pharmacy systems and processes is preferred.
