The DEVCOM Army Research Laboratory (ARL) Multi-Threat Armor Branch conducts foundational terminal ballistic experimental research at one of two experimental facilities to guide the development of vehicle protection technologies. The research team at these facilities also provide significant support to the acquisition community. To fulfill this mission, there is a requirement for senior technician experience and leadership.
Scope: Pursuant Section 3.3, Test and Evaluation Support Tasks, the Army Research Laboratory (ARL) requests subject matter expertise to conduct advanced experimentation, to mentor junior engineering technicians, and to guide the development of the facilities within the Multi-Threat Armor Branch.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: (not limited to duties as described – performs related duties as requested)
· In coordination with research engineers, independently prepare and conduct complex, non-standard experiments. Preparation involves mechanical design and fabrication, as well as facility and diagnostic equipment modification.
· Assist in the tracking of ammunition and property.
· Act as a certified Ammo Handler, Explosive Operator, and Test Director (certification through on-the-job training).
· Mentor junior engineering technicians.
· Make recommendations and implement improvements to the facility to enable state-of-the-art experimentation.
· Draft documents for review and concurrence
· Other duties as assigned
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
· Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Applied Sciences;
· 5 years’ experience in technology design and development of hardware systems or subsystems;
· 2 years’ experience designing, developing, and testing in RDT&E directly related to the PWS;
· Higher degree may substitute for years of experience
LICENSE & CERTIFICATIONS: Must have Driver’s License.
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:
· Extensive experience in warhead and armor experimentation (15+ years)
· Extensive experience in advanced experimentation diagnostics to include flash radiography, photon doppler velocimetry, high speed videography, oscilloscopes, and precision timing.
· Demonstrated proficiency with computer-aided design, such as Solidworks.
· Ability to acquire and maintain a Secret security clearance
· Pass all required training deemed necessary by the ARL safety office and facility manager, which requires familiarity/understanding with all sites and SOPs for every site within the branch.
· Job duties require a significant amount of physical labor associated with setup and teardown of equipment and materiel at test sites. Ability to lift objects up to 50 pounds. Work often involves prolonged periods of walking, standing, bending, or stooping. Work is often performed outdoors exposing incumbent to all types of weather conditions. Incumbent must follow all safety regulations and use proper protective gear or equipment.

TRAVE: Employee may be responsible for up to 25% travel.
