Length: 1700 Hour AmeriCorps Term of Service; 47 weeks; full-time 40 hrs/wk

Service Site: Triangle Land Conservancy – Williamson Nature Preserve 4409 Mial Plantation Road, Raleigh NC 27610

Compensation: $600/week AmeriCorps living allowance, plus $100/week additional benefit ($700/week, pre-tax)

AmeriCorps Award: Positions are eligible for an AmeriCorps education award upon successful completion of the program. Value of education award is $6,895 (pre-tax).

Position Details

Conservation Corps North Carolina, a program of Conservation Legacy, provides individuals with AmeriCorps service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants serve with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits to expand institutional capacity, develop community relationships, and support ecosystem health. CCNC in partnership with the Triangle Land Conservancy will host a Working Lands Climate Corps (WLCC) Member. The WLCC will train the next generation of conservation leaders for Climate Smart Agriculture and Forestry. The WLCC is a part of the American Climate Corps (ACC), and service members will receive technical skills training, education awards, and career pathway opportunities. WLCC members receive on-the-ground experience with partners and organizations who conduct programming to support the adoption of Climate Smart Agriculture and Forestry practices and systems.

The WLCC Member will serve with the Triangle Land Conservancy (TLC), a 501(c)(3) non-profit land trust working in Wake, Johnston, Durham, Chatham, Orange and Lee County looking to create a healthier and more vibrant Triangle region through our conservation efforts. TLC owns and manages seven preserves which are free and open to the public year-round. In support of one of TLC’s four public benefits of land conservation, Supporting Local Farms & Food, TLC runs an agricultural program in East Wake County that provides land and resources to new and beginning farmers to grow their business and strengthen the local food system. This position would work to support this farm program and the current farmers and partner organizations to increase outreach efforts, build capacity and marketing efforts, and strengthen the local food systems. A large focus of the position will be working closely with Karen Community Farm (KCF), a non-profit refugee incubator farm working with Karen refugees from Burma that focuses on building farm businesses and supporting the greater Karen community in East Wake County.

 

Position Responsibilities will include:

-        Work to support TLC’s farm program in collaboration with our farm partners and other similar organizations such as Soil & Water Conservation District, Natural Resources Conservation Service, etc.

-        Continue identifying and building relationships with community members, groups, and

organizations that would help support our programs

-        Facilitate and attend outreach events and meetings around the Triangle representing TLC and farm partners

-        Develop and implement marketing strategies for farmers and organizations

-        Organize activities, workshops, and volunteer events

-        Design, execute and evaluate informational programs, compose articles, and design multimedia projects to communicate the work and goals of our program

-        Outreach and Engagement Activities Include:

o   Host public meetings and events

o   Develop outreach materials such as newsletters, media stories, visuals, etc.

o   Conduct capacity building activities to expand the reach and impact of the farm program and the work of our partner organizations

o   Reach underserved farmers and communities with climate-smart agriculture resources

o   Build a network of community and professional partners that can work together to assist in shared goal of strengthening our local food system

 

Minimum Requirements:

-        Must be available for a full-time schedule for the duration of the term, with occasional evening and weekends

-        Experience with agriculture, environmental or conservation work

-        Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation, functional cell phone

-        Ability to act as an independent operator and work well in group/team settings

-        Flexibility working indoors and outdoors

-        Must be interested in agriculture, food systems, agriculture education, knowledge of marketing, facilitating and employing carious communication systems

Preferred Qualifications:

-        Associates or equivalent and working towards a Bachelor’s degree, ideally in agriculture,

environmental, or conservation focused fields

-        Experience or interest working with refugee and other underserved communities

-        Comfortable leading outreach activities, talking to groups, and facilitating events with the public

-        Have knowledge of marketing, facilitation, and ability to employ various communication systems

-        Desire to work outside in stewardship-related activities

-        Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe, Photoshop, and Canva

 

Benefits:
·        Position is eligible for an AmeriCorps education award upon successful program completion. Value of education award is $6,895(pre-tax).

·        $1,500 in professional development and training funds for use during the term of service.

·        $800 in supplies for use during the term of service (must be returned at end of position)
