Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps’ (ALCC) Mission

It is the mission of the Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps to "lead our nations back to cultural and ecological well being." Indian Youth Service Corps Mission:

The Indian Youth Service Corps (IYSC) is a new Department of Interior (DOI) program within the Public Land Corps initiative to provide opportunities for Native American youth to engage in public service, perform meaningful conservation projects on federal and Tribal lands, and stimulate interest in conservation-related careers. The IYSC is designed to be a collaborative program that provides shared benefits to program participants, tribes, federal and tribal land partners, and to the general public.

The Historic Preservation Training Center’s Traditional Trades Advancement Program (TTAP) is excited to offer an IYSC component to its program to provide indigenous youth quality hands-on experience in the preservation and maintenance of historic resources of cultural importance to indigenous peoples on National Park Service sites.

The National Park Service and Historic Preservation Training Center are seeking individuals to participate in the Traditional Trades Advancement Program (TTAP) at Flagstaff Area National Monuments. Members will receive introductory training in preservation masonry and will develop an understanding of historic resource stewardship while helping to preserve our nation’s historic resources. This program provides participants with marketable skills and excellent exposure to the historic preservation career field within the NPS as well as the private sector.

NPS - Flagstaff Area National Monuments Overview

Wupatki, Sunset Crater Volcano, and Walnut Canyon National Monuments are managed collectively as the Flagstaff Area National Monuments. Together, they protect more than 40,000 acres and 3,000 archeological sites, in a landscape of expansive high deserts, canyons, mountains, mesas, and volcanic features.

Look up at Sunset Crater’s cinder cone, down into Walnut Canyon, and out across the Wupatki grasslands to the Painted Desert. How are they connected?

At all three monuments, the earth’s geologic past lies exposed, shaped by the violence of volcanic eruptions and by the slow erosion of older rock layers. Within canyon walls and in broad scenic vistas, catch glimpses of the distant past, of ancient seas and sand dunes, and of plants and animals that have adapted to live here today.

When Sunset Crater Volcano erupted less than 1000 years ago, there were people here to see it. The event changed their lives and influenced settlement at Wupatki and throughout the region.

The pueblos of Wupatki and the cliff homes of Walnut Canyon contain information that fuels archeological theories and confirms the stories and traditions of present day American Indian peoples, who still have strong ties to these places. Visit these sites and experience something of the lives of people here before us—their migrations, living conditions, conflicts, cooperation, ingenuity, achievements, and failings.

Preserving and protecting these landscapes, with their variety of natural and cultural components, saves information for future generations.

TTAP Flagstaff Area National Monuments Individual Placements Overview:

The Individual Placement will function as a member of the Cultural Resources team and the Facility Maintenance Division. As part of these teams, they will gain experience in archeological field activities (preservation maintenance and archeological site condition assessments) as well as site record management and report writing. They will also gain experience in trade skills associated with trails, roads, and historic structure maintenance. As a result of working on these teams, the interns will be a part of preserving deteriorating archeological sites, and ensuring visitors have access to experiencing these resources.  

The Individual Placement will assist in maintaining several miles of trails, including increasing accessible access to sites and overlooks. They will also be helping with invasive species management and maintaining native landscapes. The archeological sites they will be preserving are at increased risk to deterioration due to climate change.

The Individual Placement will work alongside NPS staff from multiple divisions including: Cultural Resources, Natural Resources, Trail Maintenance, and Buildings and Utilities. We also work alongside the Maintenance Action Team (MAT) located here in Flagstaff, and the interns will have the opportunity to work alongside them during a project at our park as well as travel with them work on different projects at other parks. These experiences will provide an opportunity to network with people from other work divisions and parks that perform preservation maintenance. The supervisors will hold biweekly meetings with the interns for coaching and mentoring. The interns will also have the opportunity to shadow the supervisors to learn more about NPS careers. FLAG will also provide a resume writing and USAJobs application workshop.

TTAP Flagstaff Area National Monuments IP - Essential functions and responsibilities:

Perform preservation maintenance at pre-contact archeological sites and Ranger Cabin (historic resource).

Essential functions and responsibilities: 

1. Work as part of a crew to assess deterioration and necessary work (Scope of Work) at pre-contact archeological sites and historic resources at Walnut Canyon and Wupatki National Monument for the 2025 preservation season.
2. Assist with post-processing of archeological work done during the 2024 summer season, including data entry, report writing, and processing photos. 
3. Assist with Scope of Work reports and compliance submissions for the 2025 preservation season.

Ranger Cabin outhouse preservation

Essential functions and responsibilities:

1. Complete preservation on a structure within the Cliffs Ranger Station Historic District, including hands-on preservation and all documentation (will be trained in how to do this).

Lomaki Trail ADA Realignment

Essential functions and responsibilities:

1. Work with trail crew to shape limestone with hand chisels and install stone along trail. 
2. Lay down aggregate base subgrade to specified depth and compact with powered tamper. 
3. Spread Stalok proprietary trail surface to required grade using rakes and levels, and compact

Preferred Qualifications:

• Any experience or education in relative fields (not required)

Minimum requirements:

• Must have a valid drivers license
• Must pass required background checks 
• Must be ages 18-30, 35 if Veteran honorably discharged
• Must have personal vehicle to commute and/or to access local stores/facilities – closest town: Flagstaff, AZ. 
• Moderate to heavy physical effort is required for this position, including, lifting, or handling of objects over 50lbs using proper techniques.
• Standing or kneeling for long periods and will be required to climb ladders, work from scaffolding or platforms, work on uneven or angled surfaces such as a roof, and/or be able to work in confined spaces.
• Ability to work 8–10-hour days in various conditions and/or “hitch schedule” 
• Willingness to learn and work as part of a team.
•  Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
