Position Details

Stewards Individual Placement Program (Stewards) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health.

 

Stewards in partnership with USDA Forest Service, Southwestern Region, Lands and Minerals is seeking a Realty Specialist Resource Assistant to perform work assignments designed to familiarize the individual with the principles and techniques associated with land activities, including real estate transactions, real property assignments, land status, withdrawals, title claims, rights-of-way, procurements, and/or water rights. The individual serves as a trainee on selected land acquisition, adjustment, exchange and disposal cases and performs such assignments to acquire a progressively broader background in the knowledge and skills necessary for higher-grade realty work.  The individual will obtain basic knowledge of realty instruments, use of supporting documents, real estate terminology, and basic realty procedures to acquire practical experience in negotiating and completing land transactions.

 

Position Responsibilities will include:

·        Becomes familiar with agency policies and regulations associated with lands activities and where to find them and utilizes them in the performed work.

·        Extracts and prepares real estate ownership data and reviews realty instruments to ensure that all policy and legal requirements are met.

·        In a developmental capacity, accompanies higher-grade specialists in contacts with landowners and property inspections and assembles routine documents for real estate transactions.

·        In a training capacity, may assemble comparable sales information and other real estate market data, and verify the terms of proposed real estate transactions

·        In a training capacity, researches and extracts real estate ownership data, compiles reports on ownership information, land status, water rights, and reviews simple realty instruments to ensure that all requirements are met.

·        Completes administrative tasks and reviews to help become familiar with Forest Service realty processes and terminology, to learn about the work of the office and to help meet records management requirements and needs.

·        Perform collateral tasks such as assisting with account information, payment processes and database/SharePoint creation and submittal needs.

·        Become a Contracting Officer’s Representative and receive other training helpful to the position.

 

Minimum Requirements:

·        Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

·        Ability and willingness to follow written and oral instructions, as given.

·        Ability to hike in all weather, topography and elevations.  Site inspections may occur in remote locations and may require an overnight stay(s).  It is infrequent that you can drive to the properties to be inspected.

·        Ability to obtain a federal drivers license and drive a government vehicle.

·        Must be 18 years or older.

·        Must have High School Diploma/GED.

·        Must have or be able to obtain a post-secondary degree by end of service (Associate’s or Higher)

·        Must have a valid driver’s license and be insurable by Conservation Legacy (over 21 years old or drivers license for at least three years).

·        US Citizen or Legal Permanent Resident

 

Preferred Qualifications:

•             Basic knowledge of realty instruments, use of supporting documents, real estate terminology, and basic realty procedures or subject matters related to real estate

·        $50/monthly commuting allowance. (pre-tax)

·        $4,750.0 Professional Development and Travel fund.

·        Eligible for Health Benefits after 60 Days of Employment.

·        On-the-job training related to position responsibilities.

 

*The USFS Resource Assistant Program (RAP) is a rigorous, immersive, paid internship providing developmental and training opportunities for individuals interested in learning more about Forest Service careers. After completing a minimum of 960 hours of satisfactory work and an associate degree, RA’s may acquire a two-year certificate of noncompetitive hiring eligibility. The certificate enables participants to apply to internal merit announcements for qualifying permanent General Schedule FS positions as well as a Direct Hire Authority for FS Career positions.
