Stewards Individual Placements (Stewards) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our cultural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health. 

Stewards in partnership with Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park are seeking an intern who will complete a Cultural Landscape Inventory report for the Kahuku Unit of Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. This will involve conducting field work, collecting GPS data, completing GIS maps, archival research, reviewing existing oral history interviews, and potentially conducting several new oral history interviews to compile into the Cultural Landscape Inventory report.

 

Position Responsibilities will include:

  • Completing a Cultural Landscape Inventory report for the Kahuku Unit of Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park
  • Field work will occur in a remote area of the park accessed by 4WD. The field work may require hiking over rough terrain in inclement weather with a backpack weighing up to 40 lbs
  • Work will include GPS and GIS mapping, archival research, compiling existing oral history interviews, and potentially conducting new oral history interviews

 


Required Skills

Minimum Requirements:

  • Knowledge and expertise in Hawaiian culture and ethnographic resources
  • Proficiency in GPS/GIS mapping
  • Educational background in history or anthropology
  • Skilled in research and writing
  • Applicants must pass a criminal background check which requires fingerprinting by a DOI approved location prior to start date
  • Must be 18 or older
  • Must be a U.S. citizen and able to pass background checks

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proficient in ōlelo Hawaiʻi
  • Knowledgable in how to apply the National Register of Historic Places criterion
  • Graduate-level student

 

Benefits:

  • Position is eligible for an AmeriCorps education award upon successful completion of the program. Value of education award is $6,895 (pre-tax)
  • Living allowance: $675/week (pre-tax)

  • ESRI ArcPro training
  • Other NPS trainings may be available as opportunities arise
