Title: AmeriCorps Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Survey Technician 

Start: June 3, 2024 – August 16, 2024 (flexible)

Stipend: $760 living stipend per week + $125 housing stipend per week

Term: 12 weeks, 40 hours per week

Location: Based out of the BLM station at the USDA Forest Service Headquarters Pueblo, CO

Status:  450-hour AmeriCorps Service Term  

Schedule: Individual Placement AmeriCorps members service hours typically follow Monday - Friday service schedule but may include weekends or evenings based on the specific needs of the service site.

Southwest Conservation Corps (SCC) is a program of the non-profit service organization, Conservation Legacy, that is built on the legacy of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) which operated from 1933 – 1942. SCC provides youth and young adults opportunities to complete conservation projects primarily on public lands. While serving with SCC, members receive training on job skills, conflict resolution, leadership, teamwork, and environmental stewardship. Programs are developed using a step ladder approach to provide a progression of skill development based on a member’s needs. Members receive a weekly living allowance, training, and an AmeriCorps Education Award (for qualifying individuals).       

 

The Pike-San Isabel National Forests and Cimarron and Comanche National Grasslands cover nearly three million acres from western Kansas to Colorado’s highest peaks along the Continental Divide. This vast landscape offers a diverse set of ecosystems that are rich in history, geology, scenery, wildlife habitat and boasts many recreation opportunities. Within this lies the Pike and San Isabel National Forest Boundary Program.

 

The Individual Placement (IP) will serve alongside various Colorado BLM and Forest Service land surveying crews West of Pueblo in Lake George, Leadville, and Salida. The focus will be marking National Forest boundaries, data collection and entry, and conducting official surveys and dependent surveys. IPs will be introduced to the Public Land Survey System (PLSS) as well as how to navigate with GPS, collect/record data, download data and properly enter survey data into a survey grade GPS unit. IPs will interact with Forest Service Resource Specialists and contribute to the National Forest infrastructure for the public to enjoy for generations to come. The boundary projects produced by the IPs will facilitate in the management of public land resources. There are also opportunities to collaborate with the Forest Service and BLM based on areas of interest.

• Received or on track to receive high school diploma or GED  

• Valid U.S Driver's License  

• Per grant funding, candidate must be 18-30 years of age, up to 35 years of age if veteran status 

• U.S. citizen, U.S. National, or Lawful Permanent Resident 

• Willing to undergo and must pass required criminal history checks
