Position Details

Stewards Individual Placements (Stewards) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health. Stewards in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management are seeking an intern who will accomplish duties in support of the cultural resource program.

 

Position Responsibilities will include:

·       Participates in cultural resource clearances to identify cultural, historic resources in areas designated for surface disturbance. Does research of files, books, etc. to obtain information on site characteristics and previous inventories in the area. Conducts site inventory as prescribed by plans or instructions. Does minor modification of instructions to accommodate site conditions. Prepares description of artifacts found. Identifies and packages artifacts to be removed from the site. Prepares information such as reports, maps, and photographs pertaining to the inventory. Updates automated databases.

·       Participates in cultural resource inventories to identify cultural, historic resources to provide predictive information to be used in the Bureau’s planning system. Does cultural resource monitoring to appraise current and potential adverse impacts upon cultural resources.

·       Compiles and provides preliminary analysis of data obtained during inventories; incorporates findings into various management reports. Is responsible for assembling all data in a logical sequence for review and use by professional cultural resource staff.

 

 

Minimum Requirements:

·       Applicant must currently be enrolled in college or university

·       Some education in the field of archaeology/anthropology

·       Valid US Drivers License with insurable driving record of at least 3 years

·       Applicants must pass criminal background checks for both DOI and AmeriCorps eligibility

·       Must be 18 years or older

·       Must be a US Citizen or legal permanent resident

 

Preferred Qualifications

·       Ability to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle or ATV

·       Completion of an archaeological field school

 

Benefits:

·       Position is eligible for an AmeriCorps education award upon successful completion of the program. Value of education award is $1,459.26 (pre-tax).

·       Living Allowance: $750/week (pre-tax; $600 Living Stipend; $150 Housing Allowance)

·       Successful completion of the rigorous internship program, along with their conferred degree, DHA-RAI Program participants that meet Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for a BLM mission-critical/hard-to-fill occupation may be directly appointed without competition to a full time, permanent position vacancy.
