Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps’ Mission: Our vision is to lead our Nations back to ecological and cultural well-being by engaging underrepresented Indigenous youth and young adults in conservation service programs that reconnect participants to the land, their cultural heritage, and their traditions. We work to remove barriers to participation, education, and employment by partnering with local community organizations, agencies, and institutes of higher learning to create paid service and career training opportunities, personal and professional development, and pathways to postsecondary education and employment. Ancestral Lands serves local tribal communities in the regions we operate.

Program Overview: The Farm Corps Program is a branch of programming at Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps. The Farm Corps program was developed in 2008 in the Pueblo of Acoma aiming to spur a movement to restore local food systems through agriculture, seed, and traditional knowledge. The goal of this position is to learn and adapt various traditional agricultural techniques while in collaboration with community members, from youth to elders, to create a traditional farm within the Pueblo of Isleta. The Pueblo of Isleta has been partnering with Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps since 2022 and has recognized the need and opportunity of the farm corps within the Pueblo and thus has decided to further partner with Ancestral Lands to seek a Farm Technician to support the development of this program. The work may include but is not limited to: removal of invasive plants, irrigation, and tool maintenance. Technician will receive training in traditional agricultural practices and contribute to the production and distribution of fresh produce for community members of Isleta Pueblo. The technician will not only be involved with constant care and development of the field but will also be focusing on identifying and building relationships and structures for the Farm Corps program with the Pueblo of Isleta.

Essential functions and responsibilities:

The applicant must be reliable, punctual, and self-motivated and able to work independently after initial training and assignment of tasks.
The applicant must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds occasionally, up to 30 pounds frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds constantly. The applicant must be able to maneuver and operate in a mixture of office work and fieldwork. This includes frequently traversing uneven terrain and the ability to walk, balance, stoop, kneel, bend, reach, push, pull, and/or grasp in variable weather conditions and situations that may require a moderate amount of physical exertion.
Applicant must be able to receive detailed information through written and/or oral communication and convey important spoken and/or written instructions accurately and effectively with multiple individuals.
Participate in occasional offsite in person/virtual meetings, trainings, and presentations.
Manage, supervise, and lead the day-to-day details of farm work.
Effectively coordinate logistics with project partners, crew members, and ALCC staff

Administration:

Notify staff of farm needs.
Work with staff to identify the goals and ideas for the overall farm corps program.

Required Experience

Besides the minimum qualifications listed below, no experience is required for this position. Training and certifications for all essential tasks will be provided. 

Minimum Qualifications:

High School Diploma, HS Equivalency Degree (HSED), or commitment to acquiring HSED while in program.
Willingness to commit fully to the program and its mission for the full duration of term.
Willingness to learn and be a part of a dynamic community of peers.
Must bring and maintain a positive perspective throughout term.
Must respect the dignity and diverse lifestyles of Indigenous people.

Must be able to work long days in adverse conditions.

Preferred Experience and Qualifications:

Demonstrated project management experience in Farming or Farm corps program.
Familiarity with Leave No Trace (LNT) principles.
Current Wilderness First Aid, Wilderness First Responder, and/or CPR certification
Experience with ALCC or other conservation corps or youth corps.
Experience with experiential and/or environmental education.
Leadership experience with youth and/or young adults.
Experience working with the vulnerable population of people, i.e. children and the elderly.

Requirements:

Must be 21 or over, have a clean driving record and a current driver’s license.
Must successfully complete a criminal history check. All offers are contingent upon successful completion of criminal history check process.
