Position Details

Stewards Individual Placement Program (Stewards) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health.

 

Stewards in partnership with the Coconino National Forest is seeking a GIS Specialist Resource Assistant to support the USFS Heritage Program. The mission and purpose of the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Program in the USDA Forest Service is to improve land management through better geospatial data management. The mission and purpose of the USDA Forest Service Heritage Program is to protect and shares significant cultural resources on public lands, ensuring that future generations can understand the human stories present on the landscapes of our national forests and grasslands.

 

The Resource Assistant will:

  • Search databases
  • Examine heritage inventory reports
  • Analyze and compare hard copy map products with digital resources and database records,
  • Scan/geo-reference hard copy maps, and
  • Enter data as necessary to correct the corporate database (NRM Heritage) records.

 

The end of project goal is to fill in a critical gap of heritage inventory records in the area around the San Francisco Peaks.

 

 

Minimum Requirements:

  • This position requires an educational background (certificate, Bachelors or Masters) in Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
  • Candidates with a background in a different land management field (biology, ecology, environmental science/studies, anthropology, etc...) will be considered as long as they have a demonstrated background in and knowledge of GIS.
  • Desired educational background and interest in anthropology/archaeology/history or heritage as well.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be insurable by Conservation Legacy (over 21 years old or drivers license for at least three years).

*The USFS Resource Assistant Program (RAP) is a rigorous, immersive, paid internship providing developmental and training opportunities for individuals interested in learning more about Forest Service careers. After completing a minimum of 960 hours of satisfactory work and an associate degree, RA’s may acquire a two-year certificate of noncompetitive hiring eligibility. The certificate enables participants to apply to internal merit announcements for qualifying permanent General Schedule FS positions as well as a Direct Hire Authority for FS Career positions.
