Redwood National and State Park YES Accessibility and Outreach Intern:
Stewards Individual Placements (SIP) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources.  YES interns focus on barriers to entry for individuals with disabilities in the outdoor workplace.  Stewards, in partnership with Redwood National and State Parks are seeking an intern who will play a critical role in helping Redwood National and State Parks, home of the tallest trees on earth, better serve our local communities by improving accessibility for patrons and staff. 

Redwood National and State Parks’ Interpretation and Education Department is seeking a YES Intern to provide meaningful experiences and connections between park visitors and the resources of Redwood National and State Parks.  The YES intern will focus on outreach to underserved communities; they will connect with new audiences and patrons to gain new perspectives on how to make the park more welcoming and accessible.  The YES intern will also provide data, suggestions, and resources on how to improve the work culture and practices for current and future employees. 

The YES member will play a crucial role in helping Redwood National and State Parks better serve our local communities by accompanying rangers on programs focused on gateway community engagement.  They will also help staff learn crucial communication skills for working with individuals with disabilities.  The YES member will additionally play a large role in creating and editing digital outreach (website, social media, videos, etc.) by helping staff understand best practices to make the products accessible for all. 

Additionally, the YES member will help create a tracking document that identifies barriers to park enjoyment for visitors with disabilities. This will involve visits to multiple sites across the park to evaluate signage, parking lot conditions, and trail descriptions.

The YES member will also potentially join rangers on ranger talks in interacting with public visitors from around the world.  There will also be limited shifts working at the visitor center to get a better understanding of the needs and requests from the visitor perspective.

Finally, the YES member will help make Redwood National and State Parks a better place to work by identifying accessibility barriers within office spaces and housing units, and then provide suggestions for remedies to increase access for current and future employees.

 

Roles and Duties Include:

  • Assist in outreach efforts with gateway communities (e.g. local schools, hosting field trips for local community groups, etc.).
  • Assist in improving digital outreach programs
  • Increase accessibility on digital platforms
  • Capture images and videos of the park and create social media and website content
  • Co-lead ranger talks at visitor center patios, campgrounds, scenic overlooks, or forests.
  • Working with other rangers at a visitor center desk providing basic park information.
  • Conduct and accessibility audit to identify barriers (physical, programmatic, communicative) for patrons with disabilities and provide best practices suggestions for improvement and removing identified barriers
  • Conduct an accessibility audit to identify barriers within the park offices and housing units for current employees and provide best practices suggestions for improvement for current and future employees
