Position Details
Stewards Individual Placements (SIP) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health. SIP, in partnership with the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSMRE), seeks one intern to play an essential role in expanding the online course catalog for the agency’s National Technical Training Program (NTTP) this Spring.
The Instructional Design Specialist will be serving as an AmeriCorps Intern to assist with the editing and development of online courses, a need that was fully recognized in response to the issues that COVID-19 and subsequent travel restrictions by Federal, State, and Tribal entities. Initially, NTTP’s course offerings were only offered in-person. These projects will aid in fulfilling the needs of communities in OSMRE-covered States and Tribes. While some courses require in-person offerings, NTTP has identified a number of courses that could be offered online. The Instructional Design Specialist will work to set up and develop courses for the Fiscal Year 2022. These courses focus on the implementation of SMCRA and environmental issues including aquatic biology, hydrology, engineering, and botany, as well as other mining-related issues (i.e. permit approval, bond release, reclamation and enforcement).
Upon completion of this Spring internship, the Instructional Design Specialist will have accomplished the redesign of an existing in-person course into an online delivery format. Additionally, the Intern will assist with the creation of a facilitator guide and participant guide for the course. The work performed by the Intern will increase the technical skills and professionalism of Federal, State, and Tribal personnel while also developing the Intern’s knowledge of training development and the subject matter that the course covers.
Position Responsibilities will include:
- Reviewing course materials and speaking with course managers and/or subject matter experts
- Identifying the online course format that will be used
- Researching and determining the best Instructional Design Models
- Identifying interaction for knowledge checks
- Choosing the right educational technology
- Identifying structure for testing, revising, and evaluating
- Creating a Facilitator’s and Participant’s Guide for a course
Minimum Requirements:
- Full vaccination against COVID-19 by the first day of employment and ability to provide proof of vaccination before starting
Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office, specifically Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
- Skills in content design, development, analysis, and evaluation
