Position Details

Stewards Individual Placement Program (Stewards) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health.

 

Stewards is partnering with Prescott National Forest to provide a 32-week paid, professional Recreation Specialist Assistant opportunity. The Resource Assistant (RA) will support both developed and dispersed recreation in an extremely engaged community focused on Sustainable Recreation with a focus on Dispersed Recreation opportunities like river access, trails (non-motorized) and wilderness and other dispersed recreation activities like OHV, dispersed camping and recreational shooting.

No housing is available for this position.

Essential Responsibilities and Functions:

  • Assist with Coordination with Landscape Architect, staff, partners.
    • Work with Supervisor to assist information gathering for various site amenities and cost estimates to inform contract development
    • Research recreation signing needs
    • Assist with any field data gathering needs from staff.
  • Assist with Mingus Campground surveys to submit to REC.GOV for inclusion into the Reservation System.
    • Research Process for submitting to Rec. GOV
    • Gather Field Data
    • Assist with data input and coordination with staff and Rec.GOV
  • Volunteer coordination / Event Planning / Trail Construction
    • Coordinate with Volunteer Staff/
    • Work with existing Volunteer Trails group
    • Plan several large events (Mostly trails related)

Required Skills:

 

Physical Requirements:

  • The work includes performing physical labor in administrative areas, developed recreation sites and general forest areas. Walking on uneven terrain, exposure to adverse weather, insects, and animals (domestic/wild) is expected. 
  • To successfully perform essential functions, the individual is required to sit, stand, walk, speak, hear, etc. May be required to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl and be able to safely lift 40 pounds.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • College graduate or college student working towards a degree in Natural Resources Management, Recreation, or related field 
  • Passion for recreation management
  • Past experience or educational background in natural resource management
  • Effective communication skills with all ages and diverse audiences.
  • Ability to work both independently and with others collaboratively on projects.
  • Deep interest in natural resource management/recreation and respect for nature. 
  • A desire to gain a deeper understanding and relationship with outdoor recreation and understand what it takes to manage our country's natural settings.
  • Experience and knowledge of outdoor recreation and environmental education and working with the public.
  • Applicants are expected to be highly motivated and willing and able to perform assigned duties with little direct supervision.
  • Ability to learn and work with agency computers and programs, i.e., Microsoft Office Suite of Programs, Excel spreadsheets, performing data entry.
  • Applicants must pass a criminal history background check.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license for at least three years or be over 21 years old with a clean driving record.
  • Must provide personal transportation to and from office.

*The USFS Resource Assistant Program (RAP) is a rigorous, immersive, paid internship providing developmental and training opportunities for individuals interested in learning more about Forest Service careers. After completing a minimum of 960 hours of satisfactory work and an associate degree, RA’s may acquire a two-year certificate of noncompetitive hiring eligibility. The certificate enables participants to apply to internal merit announcements for qualifying permanent General Schedule FS positions.
