Position Details

Conservation Corps North Carolina (CCNC) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. The Trail Assessment and Equipment Operator, an AmeriCorps Individual Placement position, serves with NC State Parks and will assist the Trails Program staff to operate trail building equipment and assist trail crews with machine building trail.  Types of equipment operated may include: mini-excavator, trail dozer, UTV, backhoe, tractor, skid steer and possibly others.  The intern will use specialized equipment to “rough cut” the trail for trail crews to hand finish the trail.  The intern will monitor trails and analyze baseline conditions of trails within North Carolina State Park managed lands when not operating machines for the trails program. CDL preferred but not required.  Area of focus will largely entail the state parks of the Piedmont region and potentially others as time allows. The primary focus of this position will be to assist the Piedmont Region Trails Specialist in conducting a region-wide assessment of the park systems’ trails and trail facilities, and compiling data into useful formats to identify management strategies and funding needs. The position may also assist in other duties such as trail design and development, grant project inspections, and trail maintenance. The standard workweek would be Monday-Friday, with the possibility of occasional weekend shifts after the Trail Assessment Technician demonstrates competency in independent work. A standard workday would be 8:00-5:00 and 40 hours per week, but due to the nature of remote travel sites daily schedules are subject to change frequently based on travel needs. The workweek may occasionally exceed 40 hours and include overnight assignments. The position duty station will be determined upon candidate selection, but most work activities will take place remotely. This position will be supervised and supported by the Piedmont Region Trails Specialist.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Graduation from a two-year technical school with an Associate’s degree in natural resource management, environmental science, parks and recreation or related curriculum OR
  • Actively enrolled in a natural resource management, environmental science, parks and recreation accredited bachelor’s degree program. A bachelor’s degree is preferred.
  • Prior trail maintenance experience preferred.
  • Prior experience with equipment such as mini-excavators, tractors, dozers, backhoe, trailers, etc  strongly preferred. 
  • A minimum of one standard course or related work experience with ArcGIS
  • ***Full vaccination against COVID-19 by the first day of employment and ability to provide proof of vaccination before start date

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Ability to independently or with limited oversight recognize trail-related issues caused by environmental and human factors, and basic knowledge of general prescriptive measures for the problems encountered.
  • Ability to use GPS, survey software, and related instruments for field measurements
  • Knowledge of sustainable trail principles and practices
  • Ability to competently use ArcGIS for data extraction and production of maps.
  • Ability to work independently, in remote and/or challenging terrain in various and potentially adverse weather conditions
  • Ability to hike with equipment for several miles within a day, in varying degrees of trail difficulty
  • Ability for independent planning, data organization, record-keeping, and resourcefulness in the absence of on-site supervision
  • Ability to use trail hand tools and light power equipment in a safe and efficient manner
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions from supervisors and co-workers
  • Ability to communicate effectively – both written and verbally with supervisors, co-workers, division personnel, and occasionally with public interaction.
  • Ability to complete tasks within designated timeframes
  • Ability to navigate remote settings with maps, written directions, and/or GPS.
  • Possession of a valid NC driver’s license and ability to safely operate a state-owned vehicle.
  • Must have reliable transportation to duty station, and may need to commute remotely to job sites in the event a state-owned vehicle is not available.

Communications/Interpersonal Contacts:

The position requires excellent proficiency of the English language and to be able to clearly and concisely convey information orally and in writing. Must be able to analyze and present information in required formats and present written summaries and reports of results. Position requires manipulation of information, data, and the use of but not limited to Microsoft Word, Excel, database software, and ArcGIS. Position requires the ability to effectively display data and themes in maps and visual displays.

Working Conditions/Physical Effort:

The Trail Assessment Technician may work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on varying terrain and potentially under physically demanding circumstances. 

These conditions:

  • Present the possibility of injury
  • Require long hours in isolated settings
  • Require physical exertion, outdoors, in all weather conditions on potentially difficult or hazardous terrain
  • Require the ability to occasionally use hand tools and/or light machinery
  • Require the willingness to travel frequently, work varying shifts, and potentially overnight stays.
