TTAP- APIS Preservation Trainee (Maintenance)

 

Position Details

Stewards Individual Placement Program (SIPP) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health. SIPP in partnership with the National Parks Service Apostle Islands National Lakeshore are seeking an intern who will serve on the Park’s National Historic Preservation Team.

 

Preservation Teams perform preservation maintenance and treatment repairs on historic assets on remote islands throughout the park, utilizing a variety of trade skills. Participant will develop skills in masonry pointing, foundation repair, cedar shake roof repairs, and window restoration on park structures, including the Michigan Island Barn and Outer Island Lighthouse.

 

Position Responsibilities will include:

  • This intern will be working on historic assets on remote islands throughout the park including
  • Scraping and Painting Michigan Island Barn and Privy
  • Roofing (cedar shake) Michigan Island Barn and Privy.
  • Repair to the historic siding on Michigan Island barn and Privy
  • Repairing historic masonry on Michigan Island Barn and Privy
  • Repairing foundations on Michigan Island Barn and Privy
  • Repairing Windows and Doors on Michigan Island Barn and Privy
  • Roofing (steel shingle) Outer Island Lighthouse
  • Tuck pointing chimney on Outer Island Fog Signal
  • Window Glazing various historic windows
  • Repair to numerous exterior elements (wood trim, siding, brick structures, steel towers, plaster repair and patch)
  • Informal condition assessments

 

Minimum Requirements:

  • Education requirements High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • Basic knowledge of hand tools and uses
  • Follow oral and written instructions
  • Full vaccination against COVID-19 by the first day of employment and ability to provide proof of vaccination before starting

 

 

 Preferred Qualifications:

  • Carpentry, Masonry or other trade skills knowledge and skills
  • Willingness to learn
  • Basic knowledge of hand tools and use
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions
