Location:

Within the Southwestern Region- one position available in New Mexico and one position available in Arizona; Location TBD after selection.  One RA will need to be located in New Mexico and one in Arizona. Duty location will be determined based on applicant pool. There are Forest Service office spaces available for each state/each RA.

Living Allowance:

$18.75/hour

Position Details

Stewards Individual Placement Program (Stewards) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health. Stewards in partnership with the USDA Forest Service Southwestern Regional Office are seeking (2) resource assistants to assist in recreation planning and design for projects funded under the Great American Outdoors Act.  These positions will serve the USDA Forest Service Southwestern Region Regional Office and 11 National Forests across the region with professional landscape architecture services in support of projects for the Great American Outdoors Act (GAOA) under the mentorship and advisement of agency landscape architects, planners, and engineers.

 

Position Responsibilities will include:

These positions serve as a Landscape Architect Resource Assistants under the direct supervision of a senior landscape architect.  The positions assist with a variety of duties in support of senior staff for the Southwestern Region's Great American Outdoors Act program, including environmental planning, design, and construction phases of projects.   

 

The Resource Assistants (RA) will work with the Regional Asset Management Team in providing mission support to Great American Outdoors Act projects in the Southwestern Region. The Landscape Architect (LA) RAs will train and mentor under Agriculture Conservation Experienced Service (ACES) Program LAs and Forest Service (FS) LA to learn FS design and planning practices. They will provide these landscape architecture services to the units with oversight and supervision. The use of a government vehicle may be necessary for this position.

 

Primary duties will include:

  • Landscape Architecture assistance to GAOA projects in the planning/pre-design stage of projects
    • Essential functions and responsibilities:
      • Prepares pre-design/ recreation planning documents
      • Reviews and complete of site analyses for projects and preparation of appropriate level of documentation
      • Coordinates and Collaborates on the preparation of pre-design, recreation planning documents and products with relevant Forest contacts, and subject matter experts.
      • Finalizes recreation planning/pre-design documents and products
      • Visits project sites to collect data on topography and other natural characteristics.
      • Uses a variety of computer software such as AutoCAD and GIS, prepares site inventories, analyses and preliminary design concepts.
      • Independently researches and compiles project information such as program documents, maps and reports.
      • Prepares preliminary technical reports and other materials for existing or potential recreation sites for review by senior landscape architects.

 

  • Landscape Architecture assistance to GAOA projects in the design of projects
    • Essential functions and responsibilities:
      • Prepares site development plans, design details, and construction specifications for recreation sites for review by senior landscape architects.
      • Assists in the development and production of plans, details, and specifications for recreation sites based on general guidance and review provided by senior landscape architects, including writing applicable contract specifications.

 

Minimum Requirements:

  • Principles of Landscape Architecture:
    • Design
      • Knowledge of the concepts, principles, theories, and methods of landscape architecture; qualifications to include design skills for designing, preparing, and implementing a variety of moderate to highly complex recreational facilities and projects, master plans, design narratives, site development plans, contract packages, and estimates.
    • Familiarity with design software and technology
      • Intermediate experience and skills in using drafting techniques and computer-assisted design technology such as AutoCAD, Landcadd, and Google Sketchup.
      • Basic familiarity with topographic surveying methods.
    • Ability to research new technology to identify and recommend solutions to design issues
  • Strong Communication skills - ability to provide both written and oral information exchange, instructions, and answers to inquiries.
  • Enthusiasm for working in the outdoors and sharing with others.
  • Ability to get along well with others.
  • Receptive to mentorship, open to learning, and strong teamwork skills
  • Driver’s License and ability to pass MVR through Conservation Legacy (must be over 21 years old or have had license for 3 years)

 

 Preferred Qualifications:

  • Adobe Creative Suite experience and skills are a plus.

  • Training provided through webinar, self-directed literature review, and by senior landscape architect mentors virtually and in the field on the design process, accessibility requirements, scenery management, recreation opportunity spectrum, architectural themes, recreation settings, Forest Service mission, policies and directives, Great American Outdoors Act (GAOA) requirements, sustainable recreation, materials, site analysis, project review, National Environmental Policy Act, etc.

 *This position is for 1 year, after fulfilling the program you will gain a two-year certificate for Non-competitive hiring authority in the USFS
