Living Allowance: 

$550 /week 

AmeriCorps Award:

Position Details 

Stewards Individual Placement Program (SIPP) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health. 


SIPP in partnership with the National Park Service and Historic Preservation Training Center are seeking individuals to participate in the Traditional Trades Advancement Program. Participants will receive introductory training in a variety of traditional trades and will develop an understanding of historic resource stewardship while helping to preserve our nation’s historic resources. This program provides participants with marketable skills and excellent exposure to the historic preservation career field within the NPS as well as the private sector.  


The Facilities division is responsible for the upkeep of all structures and landscapes at the Home 

of Franklin D. Roosevelt, Vanderbilt Mansion, and Eleanor Roosevelt National Historic Sites. 


This AmeriCorps term will focus on specific preservation tasks on the primary resources within the 

three park complex. The TTAP’s contributions will further the preservation efforts of park staff 

and enable the visiting public to experience the parks in a well-kept fashion. 


The specific projects the intern will be working on include: 

Sidewalk replacement in the Italian Gardens of Vanderbilt Mansion Design and construction of replica garden arbor for the Gravesite of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt. Fabrication of park trail signage. 


Position Responsibilities will include:  

  • Sidewalk replacement  at Vanderbilt Italian Gardens 
  • Work with park lead to document and remove existing sidewalk 
  • Replenish and compact sub-base for new sidewalk 
  • Utilize concrete pouring techniques to complete project 
  • Work with park lead to design replica based on historic photos and description for Rose Garden Arbor at Presidential Gravesite 
  • Fabrication and installation of park trail signage 


Minimum Requirements:  

  • Moderate to heavy physical effort is required for this position, including occasional lifting or handling of objects over 50lbs using proper techniques. 
  • Standing or kneeling for long periods and will be required to climb ladders, work from scaffolding or platforms, work on uneven or angled surfaces such as a roof, and/or be able to work in confined spaces. 
  • Ability to stoop, bend, kneel, climb and walk in all manners of environmental conditions such as rain, mud, and extreme heat or cold. 
  • Must be able to provide own transportation to Roosevelt-Vanderbilt Mansion NHS. 
  • Must be 18-30 years of age, maximum 35 for Veterans with DD-214. 
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen. 
  • Full vaccination against COVID-19 by the first day of employment and ability to provide proof of vaccination before starting 


 Preferred Qualifications:  

  • A career interest in building trade skills and/or historic preservation 
  • Is comfortable working outside in varying weather conditions and at heights 
  • Have a willingness to work hard and get dirty 
  • Have a serious attitude toward safety all day, every day 
  • Have the ability to think critically and creatively 
  • Have positive attitude 
  • Have ability to communicate effectively 
  • Have a professional and respectful manner and works well within a team 
  • Ability to commit to a four-month experience of combined training and hands-on work 
  • Flexibility to work outside of traditional hours may be required 
  • Have the desire and ability to complete all program training requirements in order to receive NCCER and OSHA certifications including assessments and all classroom and online coursework.

  • Living Allowance: $550/week (pre-tax) 
  • Core curriculum through the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER), an industry leading certification program for maintenance and craft professionals. 
  • OSHA-10 Safety Training 
  • Historic Preservation Fundamentals Training 
  • Participants who complete the program will receive Public Land Corps status for two years that can be used for securing employment with the federal government.
