Position Details

Stewards Individual Placement Program (SIPP) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health.

SIPP in partnership with the National Park Service and Historic Preservation Training Center are seeking individuals to participate in the Traditional Trades Apprenticeship Program. Members will receive introductory training in a variety of traditional trades and will develop an understanding of historic resource stewardship while helping to preserve our nation’s historic resources. This program provides participants with marketable skills and excellent exposure to the historic preservation career field within the NPS as well as the private sector. 

This internship position will work with Park facilities team and the Historic Preservation Training Center to focus on the historic masonry preservation of Fort Pickens. Fort Pickens is a Third System coastal fortification designed to protect the Pensacola Bay and the Pensacola Navy Yard and Depot from foreign attack. Majority of the work will be repointing brick with natural cement, lime mortar with some selective brick replacement.

 

Position Responsibilities will include:

  • Learn historic masonry techniques to preserve cultural resources.
  • Clean and prep brick exterior walls through removal of vegetation, applying a cleaning solution, and washing brick.
  • Repoint masonry joints with national cement-based mortar.
  • Clean mortar joints.
  • Learn how to mix natural cement.
  • Reset loose or missing bricks.

 

Minimum Requirements:

  • Moderate to heavy physical effort is required for this position, including occasional lifting or handling of objects over 50lbs using proper techniques.
  • Ability to stoop, bend, kneel, climb and walk in all manners of environmental conditions such as rain, mud, and extreme heat or cold.
  • Applicant must have valid driver’s license and able to operate a pickup truck.
  • Must be able to provide own transportation to Gulf Islands National Seashore, Gulf Breeze FL
  • Must be 18-30 years of age, maximum 35 for Veterans with DD-214
  • Full vaccination against COVID-19 by the first day of employment and ability to provide proof of vaccination before starting

  • A career interest in building trade skills and/or historic preservation
  • Is comfortable working outside in varying weather conditions and at heights
  • Have a willingness to work hard and get dirty
  • Have a serious attitude toward safety all day, every day
  • Have the ability to think critically and creatively
  • Have positive attitude
  • Have ability to communicate effectively
  • Have a professional and respectful manner and works well within a team
  • Ability to commit to a four-month experience of combined training and hands-on work
  • Flexibility to work outside of traditional hours may be required
  • Have the desire and ability to complete all program training requirements in order to receive NCCER and OSHA certifications including assessments and all classroom and online coursework.

  • Core curriculum through the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER), an industry leading certification program for maintenance and craft professionals.
  • OSHA-10 Safety Training
  • Historic Preservation Fundamentals Training
  • Participants who complete the program will receive Public Land Corps status for two years that can be used for securing employment with the federal government.
