Position Details:


Stewards Individual Placements (SIP) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health. SIP in partnership with Waco Mammoth National Monument are seeking an intern who will assist members of the Interpretation and Education Division in developing and presenting formal and informal (in-person and virtual) interpretive programs, including education programs to visitors of all ages. Programs will focus on the cultural and environmental themes associated to the Waco Mammoth site resource of in situ fossils, and on the mission of the National Park Service. As a result, intern will help Waco Mammoth National Monument's mission to engage new and diverse audiences.


The selected candidate will have the opportunity to work alongside employees in the park and our sister park, Lyndon B Johnson National Historical Park. The candidate will learn the general operations and day to day tasks of individuals from the divisions of Administration, Curatorial, Paleontology/Park Enforcement. These learning opportunities will provide a chance for networking beyond one division and give the candidate an up-close experience to how National Park unit divisions work closely to maintain and operate a park.


Position Responsibilities will include:


  • Learning about Columbian mammoths, the field of paleontology, and the history and legacy of the site, including the greater park resources.
  • Assisting in providing creative, relevant, and engaging interpretive experiences for visitors of all ages and different backgrounds.
  • Developing and expanding distance learning programs
  • Assisting with development and implementation of plans for asynchronous education programs
  • Creating a list of local school contacts for education engagement
  • Assisting in creating new virtual interpretive opportunities
  • Assisting in community outreach program planning and implementation with a focus on underserved communities


Minimum Requirements:


  • An education background in history, political science, education, environmental science, or similar subjects is recommended, but not required
  • Great public speaking skills
  • Positive attitude
  • Able to multi-task with minimal supervision
  • Self-starter, creative, strategic, and resourceful



 Preferred Qualifications:


  • Strong verbal and communication skills
  • Experience with video filming and editing
  • Experience working in customer service
  • Strong computer skills
  • Comfortable working with large groups
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and social media platforms
  • Lives within the local Waco commuting area

  • Specific training offered: onsite safety training, education and interpretive program training, customer service training, diversity equity and inclusion training.
