Southwest Conservation Corps’ Mission 

It is the mission of the Southwest Conservation Corps to empower individuals to positively impact their lives, their communities, and the environment. 

 

Program Overview: 

Join the Southwest Conservation Corps’ Individual Placement team and help the US Forest Service carry out its mission of “caring for the land and serving people”. This resource assistant will join the Cibola National Forest and the National Grasslands Wildlife, Fish, and Rare Plants Program. The mission of this program is to facilitate the implementation of multiple use resource projects while striving to protect and enhance wildlife, fish, and rare plant habitat. As part of this mission, it may be necessary to develop project design features within an interdisciplinary setting which aim to mitigate the overall impact of the federal actions on threatened, endangered, and/or Forest Sensitive wildlife, fish, and plant (WFRP) species.

 

This individual will work directly to support a three-forest effort known as the Tri-Forest Restoration Initiative (Tri-FRI). This initiative plans restoration work across the three northern New Mexico Forests – Carson, Cibola, and Santa Fe. This resource assistant will be involved with performing project clearances for the WFRP department and the Cibola. They will gain direct experience in how federal actions are evaluated by wildlife biologists. They will learn the steps necessary to plan, implement, and document wildlife surveys and how they are incorporated into environmental analyses. The individual will also learn how to evaluate “Habitat Stamp Program” water and habitat developments, how to document needed work and supplies, and how to help write a program of work for next year’s competitive funding efforts. Cross-training and other resources will be available and encouraged.

 

Essential functions and responsibilities include:

  • Assist District Biologist in performance of their normal job duties.
    • Participate in wildlife surveys for the Mexican Spotted Owl, Northern Goshawk, Prairie Dogs, and any other species.
    • Learn how to properly document wildlife survey through official protocol forms
    • Build maps for survey (GIS training and experience)
    • Perform additional field work in assistance to district biologists under their guidance, where needed, and in conjunction with other resource programs on a case-by-case basis.
    • Perform office duties as assigned which may include wildlife, fisheries, and rare plant records management, geospatial data entry (GIS), provide assistance with research, technical writing of Biological Evaluations, and assistance with environmental analyses.
  • Work with ongoing interagency cooperative projects
    • Learn about Habitat Stamp Program (HSP) functions and participate in evaluation of water and habitat developments Forest-wide
    • Learn how to evaluate and document specific needs for maintenance, supplies needed and estimate labor costs to fix features
    • Build a work plan for the HSP work for all visited features.
  • Learn and apply principles of multi-use resource management
    • Collaborate and participate in field/office work for other resource areas as opportunities arise. (hydrology, minerals, forestry, heritage, range, recreation, engineering, and fuels
    • Meet virtually or in person with off-Forest staff to discuss the variety of projects and wildlife needs as they vary across the Region.

 

General Qualifications: 

  • Applicants with a bachelor’s degree in biological sciences, ecology, mammalogy, zoology, fisheries, wildlife management, botany, or similar area of study.
  • Experience with ArcGIS and field navigation using GPS.
  • Previous experience surveying or participation in research projects for wildlife, plants, or fish.

  • Possess a current and valid driver’s license and be capable of driving 4x4 pick-up trucks and SUVs over long distances, rough terrain, and on Forest roads.

 

The successful applicant must be self-motivated and able to work independently with limited supervision after the initial training period. The applicant must be able to maneuver and operate in a mixture of office and field work. This can include long periods of standing or walking on rough, uneven ground, bending, crouching, and stooping. Prior to starting this position, a government security background clearance will be required.
