Program and Position Summary:

Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps engages motivated youth and young adults to complete challenging and impactful conservation and service projects throughout Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico and Utah. Projects may include, trail construction & maintenance, habitat improvement, hazardous fuels reduction, re-vegetation and local environmental service projects.  Crews may also complete technical and/or specialized projects depending on project partner needs, including disaster relief if the opportunity arises.  ALCC youth programming includes hiking clubs and expeditions to significant sites to local Indigenous communities.

The Native Conservation Corps crew is led by a supervisor with outdoor education and risk management experience to provide an emotionally and physically safe environment for members.  Members will gain teambuilding and outdoor learning experiences at various National Park Service sites in the Southwest.  The summer term will include a river-rafting expedition in the Grand Canyon.

Our programs focus on place-based learning, life skills development, appreciation of diversity, civic responsibility, and personal development. ALCC also provides opportunities for members to learn about the local environment and issues surrounding conservation.  Members will gain experience in outdoor jobs, learn about resource management career pathways, and expand their networks. 


Required Skills

 

Participants must understand the need for:


Commitment
 – ALCC members must make a strong commitment to complete all aspects of the program including conservation projects, education, training and national service.  Members must commit to participating in all crew activities for the entire term length.


Safety
 - Members are required to participate in a culture of safety on their crew during all program activities by being aware of and adhering to program policies.


Professionalism
 – Participants must be willing to follow all ALCC policies, maintain professional boundaries, and appropriately represent Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps and AmeriCorps.  Tolerance of diversity is a core value of ALCC.


Teamwork
 – Members must be willing to demonstrate teamwork and respect for others and assist in making group decisions.


Technology
 – The use of technology, including cell phones, iPods, MP3 players, and other battery powered devices is not allowed during all work, chore, group and meal times as well as during de-rigs and rig-up.  Members must agree to not use these types of technology while participating in these activities and must agree to help regulate this important ALCC policy.


Substance Free
 – Participants MUST be willing and able to refrain from tobacco products, alcohol, and/or drugs while participating in the ALCC program.


Required Experience

 

Besides the minimum qualifications listed below, no experience is required for this position.  ALCC will provide training and certifications for all essential tasks. 


Minimum Qualifications:

* Enrolled in high school or secondary school.

* Willingness to commit fully to the program and its mission for the full duration of term

* Flexibility, adaptability, and capacity to participate in a fluid, changing environment

* Willingness to learn and be a part of a dynamic community

* Must bring and maintain a positive perspective throughout term

 

 Essential Functions:

* Frequently required to walk and hike over long distances

* Required to use hands to operate objects, tools or controls, and to reach with hands and arms

* Regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
