Position Details

Stewards Individual Placement Program (SIPP) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health. SIPP in partnership with the C&O Canal National Historical Park are seeking an intern who will work in the park’s Division of Interpretation, Education, & Volunteers. The mission and purpose of the Division is to provide relevant and provocative audience-centered experiences through a wide variety of interpretive and educational programming services.

 

Position Responsibilities will include:

  • Conduct informational/educational-related visitor contacts and site inspections through a variety of methods
    • Work with supervisor to identify high visitation areas of the park where the intended goals of informal roving will have the greatest benefit.
    • Determine what materials, equipment, and interpretive props are needed to carry out roving successfully
    • Record number of contacts and assess visitor contact effectiveness
  • Assist with replica canal boat and mule operations for visitor enjoyment and learning
    • Assist visitor services and interpretive staff with hands-on operation of the replica canal boat and mules used to pull the boat
    • Determine what materials, equipment, and interpretive props are needed to carry out boat and mule operations successfully
    • Record number of contacts and assess operation effectiveness
  • Develops and presents formal interpretive talks for park visitors
    • Research, develop, and present formal interpretive talks that have a beneficial effect on visitor understanding and appreciation of the park.
    • Determine what materials, equipment, and interpretive props are needed to carry out roving successfully
    • Record number of contacts and assess program effectiveness

 

Minimum Requirements:

  • Working towards or earned a undergrad or graduate degree in History, Communications, Drama, or similar
  • Must be able to swim
  • Must have local housing

 

 

 Preferred Qualifications:

  • Public speaking experience preferable
  • Basic first aid/CPR/AED certification preferable
  • Enjoys working as a member of the team
  • Excellent problem-solving skills preferable
