Job Description:
Performs lawn and landscaping duties required for the maintenance, care and modifications of the University grounds and landscaping. This will include a variety of additional tasks involving the exterior areas of campus including minor road repair and maintenance, sign installation and repair and special event setup. Some indoor tasks will be required.
Job Duties:
- Maintain a clean and safe campus by removing debris and litter from all exterior areas of campus, emptying trash receptacles and sweeping, blowing and cleaning of all exterior hard surfaces
- Maintain clean outdoor benches, handrails and trash receptacles
- Perform routine lawn maintenance practices including mowing, weed eating, edging and raking of leaves and debris
- Apply fertilizer and soil amendments, topdressing materials and soil as directed
- Perform other cultivation practices as directed such as aerification, dethatching, tilling and drainage improvements
- Cultivation, planting and maintaining flower beds
- Planting and maintenance of shrubs, trees and a variety of grasses
- Water trees, shrubs, lawns and plants using hoses and assist in irrigation repair and/or installation
- Perform routine operator maintenance of grounds equipment
- Maintain a clean work environment, including vehicles, equipment and Grounds Department areas
- Removal of snow and ice from steps, sidewalks, streets and other public passageways on campus and assists in the preparation for such weather events
- Repair and maintenance of sidewalks, parking lots, streets and other public passageways
- Special event setups and breakdowns including working during events when necessary
- Assist in moving of furniture, equipment and other items when needed
- Perform all other tasks assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
- Graduate of a standard high school or equivalent
- Possession of a valid Oklahoma driver’s license
- Ability to understand and implement verbal and written instructions
- Ability to operate and maintain manual, power, riding and tractor mowers, power edgers, trimmers and shears and other landscaping equipment
- Must be able to perform strenuous work requiring lifting, climbing, ladder work, crawling, overhead work, kneeling, walking and standing for extended periods of time
- Must be able to work in extreme weather conditions
- One year grounds maintenance or related field experience
Preferred Qualifications:
- Two years’ experience in commercial or university grounds maintenance, landscaping or related field
- Experience and working knowledge in irrigation repair and/or installation
- Training or education in turfgrass management, horticulture or agronomy
Physical Requirements:
Frequent and repeated bending, stooping, and kneeling. Working with arms extended above head. Frequent lifting and carrying loads in excess of fifty pounds. Loading and unloading truck, manually. Working in extreme weather conditions. Exposure to physically demanding and potentially hazardous tasks. May be designated as an "essential position" during emergency closures. May be required to remain on campus overnight during weather or other emergencies.
Salary Range:
Commensurate with experience.
