The Plumber will maintain, repair and install the university’s plumbing systems in all university buildings and campus grounds. Work includes new plumbing installations as well as plumbing remodeling and repair. Responsible for reading blue prints, and accomplishing plumbing objectives in a professional, timely manner within budget.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Inspects, maintains, installs and repairs all water, gas, air, sewer, drainage and steam plumbing systems.
- Repairs pipes, fittings, appurtenances, valves, plumbing fixtures, boilers, steam equipment and furnaces.
- Cuts, bends, threads and fits pipes with adjoining assemblies.
- Repairs plumbing leaks.
- Opens clogged drains.
- Installs sinks, showers, toilets, faucets, water heaters, shut off valves, insulation and similar plumbing items.
- Interprets blueprints and works from sketches or verbal instructions. Inspects completed work to ensure compliance with engineering specifications and local building codes.
- Requisitions plumbing supplies and equipment.
- Estimates time and material costs for plumbing projects.
- Assist with development of capital project scope and budget for equipment replacement and energy conservation opportunities.
- Verify, implement and perform preventative maintenance standards on all plumbing equipment.
- Document all work in the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
- Keeps plumbing shop in neat and clean condition.
- Cares for all tools needed in plumbing work.
- Does welding or mechanical jobs as needed.
- Operates small equipment, pipe threader, welding and brazing equipment, manual and electric powered pipe drain cleaning machine, and forklift.
- May Supervises and train student workers
- Performs all work in accordance with established safety procedures. Applies all applicable Cal OSHA, OSHA and local safety requirements. Wears required and appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) required for the work.
- Complies with all university safety and risk management policies and procedures.
- Attends training programs as assigned.
- Attends and participates in safety meetings, safety training and hazard assessments.
- Reports all injuries to self and/or others as well as accidents in a timely manner.
- Miscellaneous and additional duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Working knowledge of the following: hand tools (proper use); circular saw; chain saw; pipe threader; hoist; table saw; chop saw; band saw; jig saw; reciprocating saw; gas and electric welder, etc.
- Knowledge of modern office equipment including telephone and cell phone communications, desktop and tablet computers, office systems and record keeping.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed instructions and to deal with problems as they arise.
- Ability to perform basic math skills, use decimals to compute ratios and percents, and to draw and interpret graphs.
- Ability to use passive vocabulary of 5-6000 words; to read at a slow rate; define unfamiliar words in dictionaries for meaning, spelling and pronunciation. Ability to write complex sentences, using proper punctuation, adjectives and adverbs. Ability to communicate in complex sentences; using normal word order with present and past tenses; and using a good vocabulary.
- Finger dexterity-using primarily just the fingers to make small movements such as typing, picking up objects or pinching fingers together.
- Ability to talk, especially where one must frequently convey detailed or important instructions or ideas accurately.
- Average hearing, able to hear average or normal conversations and receive ordinary information.
- Average visual ability- average, ordinary visual acuity necessary to prepare or inspect documents or products or operate machinery.
- Must be in good physical condition and able to lift and carry objects/equipment, etc. up to 50 pounds.
- Able to ascend or descend ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles, and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized. This factor is important if the amount and kind of climbing required exceeds that required for ordinary locomotion.
- Able to maintain body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing or crouching on narrow, slippery or erratically moving surfaces. This factor is important if the amount and kind of balancing exceeds that needed for ordinary locomotion and maintenance of body equilibrium.
- Able to bend body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist (stooping).
- Able to bend legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees (kneeling).
- Able to bend the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine (crouching).
- Able to move about on hands and knees or hands and feet (crawling).
- Able to extend hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
- Able to remain upright on the feet, particularly for sustained periods of time.
- Able to move about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.
- Able to use upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward or outward.
- Able to use upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, drag, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.
- Able to raise objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position to position.
- Able to pick, pinch, type or otherwise work, primarily with fingers rather that with whole hand or arm as in handling.
- Able to apply pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.

Credentials and Experience
- High school diploma or GED or equivalent,
- Valid California driver’s license.
- One (1) year of on the job training
- Minimum two (2) years of plumbing field experience.
- Industrial arts, or community college, training certification/credential preferred
- Knowledge of work order systems (CMMS) especially the Maximo CMMS experience preferred.
Special Requirements
- Occasional after hours work outside of normal university business hours (Monday through Friday, 7:00 am to 5:00 pm) will be required to perform plumbing work without disrupting university operations or to respond to emergency situations.
- Heavy lifting work will be required. Must be able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects, and
- Able to be exposed to indoor and outdoor elements, and chemical, electrical, mechanical, explosive, radiant hazards.
Hourly rate $19.51 to $22.50 plus generous benefits listed below:
