Pre-Health Coordinator, OACS

The Pre-Health Professions Coordinator manages the branch of Pre-Health Professions of OACS.  This position requires a person with skill and experience in career counseling, the knowledge and expertise to develop programs, resources, and workshops to respond to the academic and career development of students considering health profession careers, as well as advising and counseling students at all levels of preparation for entrance into professional programs.

 

The coordinator works closely with the Associate Director in planning, developing, maintaining and evaluating a program designed to help LSU students become successful professional school applicants. The goal of the office is to help students in their efforts to gain acceptance into professional health programs. The coordinator also works to provide a “home” on campus for health professions students who will not be completing their program of study at La Sierra University.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Oversee the day-to-day operation of Pre-Health, including answering questions from students, faculty, administrators, and potential students about the Pre-Health Professions programs at La Sierra University, and maintaining accurate description and current memberships of the pre-health professions committees.
  • Collaborate with CAS to maintain a current and comprehensive knowledge of pre-health academic curricula.
  • Maintain accurate up-to-date student records.
  • Maintain professional relationships with admissions and recruitment personnel from Loma Linda University and other health professions programs.
  • Update and post curriculum sheets for pre-health programs at Loma Linda University and other popular programs.
  • Update and maintain the web pages for Pre-Health Professions.
  • Oversee social media outlets for Pre-Health Professions.
  • Meet with incoming pre-health professions students during Summer Orientations regarding the pre-health options offered at La Sierra University.
  • Maintain records and retention data for all non-degree Pre-Health programs to track program completion.
  • Maintain La Sierra student records of acceptances for all health professions programs.
  • Attend conferences and educational meetings as assigned by supervisor.
  • Coordinate all efforts with administrative team.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

 

Co-Curricular Activities and Duties

  • Provide information and resource materials to help students in preparing professional school applications, the writing of personal statements, and preparing for professional school interviews.
  • Maintain resources for students in pre-health professions careers, in the form of materials and contact information for professional programs in the area.
  • Cultivate an understanding of student needs and priorities by attending club meetings when possible.
  • In collaboration with the Careers Coordinator, plan and execute opportunities for contact with health professionals by way of seminars, workshops, and access to volunteer experiences.
  • Plan, implement and oversee the overall curriculum and programs for the Pre-Health Monday Workshops.
  • Coordinate campus visits of recruitment personnel from health professions programs on campus and advertise such programs and presentations to health professions students and campus-wide.
  • Organize and coordinate consultation and interview days for pre-health students, including pre-dental, pre-medical, pre-pharmacy, pre-nursing, and pre-allied health students.
  • Organize and execute the Pre-Health Professions Completion Ceremony.

 

Recommendations Committee Duties

  • Coordinate the planning, room reservation and lunches for the committee.
  • Maintaining student files, updating & scanning all documents and send letters of recommendation to professional schools when complete.
  • Serve as the Primary Designated Signing Official for the Pre-Health Professions Program and the institutional representative to admissions officers of professional schools and pre-health professions colleagues in other institutions.
  • Organize and prepare, publication and maintenance of Student Recommendation Application packet.

Qualifications:

  • Strong organizational, interpersonal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to delegate, work in collaboration, and function independently according to task at hand.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with various entities across campus.
  • Ability to facilitate consensus with various groups/departments across campus.
  • Ability to approach programs from a macro systems viewpoint.

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in student personnel services, counseling or closely related field.
  • 3 year of experience within a university setting, preferred.
  • Experience in teaching, academic advising, student personnel or related areas preferred.
  • Experience in program development and delivery preferred.

 

Language Ability:

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public as this position frequently communicates complex information. 
  • Ability to train and monitor others’ performance.
  • Ability to present, resolve conflicts and address delicate situations.
  • Ability to motivate and persuade others.

 

Reasoning Ability:

Must have excellent data analysis skills. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

 

Computer Skills:

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, Google Docs. Incumbent will be trained to use: Blackboard, EAB, Self-service, Kronos and Banner.

 

Certificates and Licenses:

Valid CA Driver License

 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This job supervises student employees.

 

Other Demands:

Will have regular contact with others both inside and outside of the University. Results have significant broad implications for the enrollment and retention of students.

 

Wage Range: $17.70 to $19.75 per hour plus generous benefits
