GIS Intern
Internships
JMT Technology Group, a leading geospatial and information technology services and solutions provider, is looking for a GIS Intern to join their GIS team. The GIS Intern will support the JMT Technology Group by assisting with spatial data management, map creation, and geospatial analysis for ongoing projects. This entry-level position offers hands-on experience with GIS software and tools, providing valuable exposure. The intern will be working under the supervision of a Sr. GIS Professional to collect, process and maintain GIS data, produce high-quality maps and reports, and contribute to a variety of ongoing projects. This position is not eligible for employer based sponsorship with the exception of the TN visa classification.
Essential functions and responsibilities
- Collect spatial and attribute data from records research and existing sources.
- Input, digitize, and update geographic data into GIS databases (e.g., ArcGIS Pro)
- Map creation & cartography.
- Assist in designing and producing maps and visualizations for reports or presentations.
- Apply symbology, labeling and layout standards to create clear, accurate maps.
- Data management tasks involving data quality checks for errors or inconsistencies.
- Support simple geospatial analysis tasks.
- Database support including working with relational database to query or manage GIS data.
- Help with metadata creation and documentation.
- Participate in field data collection using GPS units or mobile GIS applications (if needed).
- Writing Documentation & Reporting, such as data dictionaries or project summaries.
- Contribute to reports or presentations involving spatial information.
Nonessential functions and responsibilities
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Experience
- College student enrolled in Geography, Geographic Information Systems, or Environmental Science
Preferred Experience
- Coursework in related field
- Previous internship experience
Working Conditions
Work is performed within a general office environment. Work is generally sedentary in nature but may require occasional standing and walking. Lighting and temperature are adequate and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. within the office environment.
