Xavier University’s Department of Physics & Engineering invites applications for the position of Laboratory Support Services Manager. This position provides academically informed technical assistance to the Physics & Engineering Department in order to ensure the successful teaching of laboratory courses, as well as faculty research, and related duties as needed. This 30 hours-per-week position is considered full time and is eligible for benefits.  The work may at times require morning, evening, or weekend hours.

 

Job Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the general care, upkeep, operation, and use of the physics and engineering machine shop and its associated facilities.
  • Charged with maintaining and repairing all general laboratory equipment in the department as well as providing primary assistance to the physics & engineering faculty in fabricating and maintaining all specialized and research-related equipment and systems.
  • This position can include research support to the faculty and students in carrying out specific research and/or engineering projects. In addition, this position will serve as the primary trainer (educator) for physics & engineering student shop-related training as well as a laboratory teaching assistant for specified technical aspects of physics or engineering labs.
  • May also teach undergraduate physics and engineering courses appropriate to the professional experience or background of the candidate.
  • Serves as the primary building coordinator for Lindner Hall.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree in a technical field required; a B.S. degree in Physics or Engineering preferred.
  • At least three years of experience in a relevant professional position.
  • Experience with CNC machining, CAM/CAD, and 3D printing desirable.
  • Experience with machine shop equipment set up and operation; the ability to diagnose and repair equipment and systems failures for experimental lab and research apparatus; the ability to oversee and coordinate delivery and installation of major experimental laboratory systems.
  • The ability to work independently, creatively and collaboratively with diverse team members.
  • Climb stairs; kneel, squat and lift up to 30 lbs.
