Xavier University is part of the 500-year-old Jesuit Catholic tradition of academic excellence in the liberal arts and is strongly committed to enhancing equity, inclusion, and diversity. These values are central to our mission. We strive for a climate of respect and inclusiveness that welcomes and supports members from diverse backgrounds and life experiences, is committed unreservedly to open and free inquiry, and deliberately seeks out multiple perspectives.

Xavier University invites applications for two tenure-track faculty positions in the Department of Biology to begin in Fall 2025, to complement its new undergraduate programs in Neuroscience and Genetics. Each individual must hold a Ph.D. in an area of the biological sciences, with specialization in neuroscience or genetics strongly preferred. Responsibilities include: teaching the equivalent of 3 courses per semester including introductory-level majors’ biology as well as introductory genetics and/or other upper division courses such as Genomics, Molecular Biology, and other courses related to the candidate’s area of expertise such as Developmental Biology, Neurobiology or Medical Genetics; productive engagement in scholarly activities; mentoring undergraduates in a research program relevant to human health; and advising of students. The successful candidate should bring a passion for teaching undergraduates. Experience supervising undergraduates in research is a plus, as is the interest in collaboration with other Xavier faculty. Xavier University is not equipped for vertebrate work, but has ample facilities for invertebrate models, particularly C. elegans.

A generous endowment supports faculty research in the sciences at Xavier. Additionally, Xavier’s location in Cincinnati, a vibrant city with multiple universities, research hospitals and biotechnology companies, allows faculty to work with community partners to develop research and immersive learning opportunities. Xavier is a member of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities as well as the Big East. Xavier is growing, with biomedical sciences a major focal direction and new undergraduate majors in Genetics and Neuroscience as well as a College of Osteopathic Medicine opening in 2027. Xavier recently moved from a regional to a national university in the Carnegie classifications, after decades of having been ranked consistently among the top 10 Midwest colleges and universities by U.S. News and World Report.

At Xavier and in this department, we believe our people make all the difference in cultivating an inclusive environment. Every member of our community has a role to play in advancing our architecture of belonging. We welcome candidates with unique experiences, backgrounds, education, cultures, and beliefs to apply. Candidates who demonstrate a commitment to inclusion, equity, diversity and social justice are encouraged to identify their experiences and interests.

Applicants should submit the following to Xavier University’s website: an application letter, curriculum vitae, statement of teaching philosophy that incorporates how you can support diversity and inclusion, and a statement of research interests that includes ideas for research with undergraduates. Review of applications will begin November 01, 2024. Finalists will be asked for letters of recommendation. Questions may be sent to the Chair of the Department of Biology, Dr. Jennifer Robbins, at robbins@xavier.edu.
