Xavier University invites applications for the Besl Family Chair in Ethics/Religion and Society. This teaching professor position is open to promising early-career scholars in all humanities disciplines and is renewable annually for up to 3 years. A Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree is required by the start of the position in the fall of 2024.

The E/RS Focus of Xavier’s core curriculum includes courses in philosophy, theology, and literature, as well as elective courses that foster interdisciplinary engagement with socially significant issues. The Besl Chair will teach 3 undergraduate courses per year in the E/RS Focus of the core. They will hold a Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree in a humanities discipline or an interdisciplinary degree in allied areas and their research and teaching will centrally address themes from the E/RS program.

The Besl Chair will contribute to the E/RS co-curricular program by presenting their own work as part of that series of events, and by collaborating with the E/RS Faculty Director in developing other events for the series. Applicants should also have a robust program of research and should be able to engage in interdisciplinary dialogue about the ethical and/or religious implications of socially significant issues.

Candidates should submit (1) a letter of application that a. explains their current research and identifies its connections to the central concerns of the E/RS programs and b. addresses their main areas of teaching ability, including their ability to engage diverse groups of students in learning opportunities, along with (2) a CV, and (3) brief descriptions of at least two possible E/RS courses.
