THE TEAM   

Make-A-Wish America is the national headquarters for our organization, providing resources and support for our Chapters around the country. The Finance Team is focused on supporting our chapters through a shared financial services model, providing chapters with financial processing, reporting, and tax filings. They also maintain the financial health of the national office through budgeting, monthly reporting, accounting, reconciliations, and payables.  

 

THE ROLE   

The Director, Financial Controller is responsible for maintaining all procedures and controls related to the company's financial accounts. Owns and manages financial and accounting systems and functions for the National Office.

 

Where You Come In 

As the Director, Financial Controller you will:    

  • Implement and own the accounting and finance infrastructure required for the successful execution of the company’s accounting, transaction monitoring, and financial reporting activities, which includes accounting policy.
  • Identify and implement systems required for monitoring, reporting, analyzing, and controlling the company’s accounting activities according to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), Identifying and implementing systems required for managing major gifts, grant project, and other special finances and complying with applicable local, State, and Federal regulations
  • Oversee a team of accounting professionals that manage daily accounting needs of the organization including deposits, disbursements, transfers and reconciliations.
  • Oversee all aspects of month-end financial close process to ensure monthly financial information is accurate and books are closed in a timely manner.  
  • Manage accounting for all National revenue sources cash and in-kind, e.g. endowment funds, charitable gift annuities, corporate alliances and investment accounts. 
    Oversees and reviews restriction requirements, including preparation of net asset roll forward.
  • Collaborate with Legal to review and approve contracts.
  • Collaborate with Financial Planning and Analysis function to analyze financial statement variances.
  • Provide accurate and timely financial data for budgetary and financial decisions, tax planning, and return preparation.
  • Manage relationships with external partners such as banking, investment advisors, and acts as the primary contact in the annual external audit process communicating with external auditors, Finance team and National Office staff.
  • Conduct ad-hoc financial analysis and provides recommendations to support strategic decision-making.
  • Perform other job-related duties, as assigned. 

 

What You’ll Need  

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, or related field.
  • CPA designation required.
  • 5-7 years of experience in accounting or related field.
  • 3-5 years in a management or leadership role required.
  • Fluency in Microsoft Office suite (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Working knowledge of nonprofit organizations is preferred.
  • Position may require travel to organizational conferences and events.
