What It Takes

Open to undergraduate students interested in gaining hands-on practical experience in the construction field. Qualified applicants will assist project teams in managing construction projects/ including all phases from bidding to final completion.

  • Assignments include office and job site; relocation to a remote sites may be required.
  • Transportation is required.
  • Work periods are 10-14 weeks; 40 hours/week.
  • Housing may be provided in certain situations.

 

Intern Job Description

Reporting Relationship: Depending on the work assignment, interns will report to a project manager, superintendent, project engineer or field engineer. You may be assigned to the office, jobsite or mix of both.

Tasks Assigned: You will be learning the engineering and technical aspects of the project both in the field and in the office. Your experience will include some or all the following:

  • Quantity take-off
  • Layout
  • Preconstruction/as-built surveys
  • Shop drawing & submittal review/approval & maintenance of log.
  • Request for information (RFI) review/submission/response & maintenance of log.
  • Interfacing with subcontractors & suppliers
  • Attending weekly progress & coordination meetings
  • Assisting with coordinating the work between the owner, architect & subcontractors
  • Assisting during the bid process with things such as subcontractor outreach/solicitation, bid package development, bid review & verification, etc.
  • Assist with reviewing construction documents & specifications.
  • Assisting with reviewing all document revisions & clarifications
  • Assisting with maintaining field records
  • Assisting with estimates/budgets/value engineering/constructability surveys
  • Assist with writing subcontracts & purchase orders.
  • Assisting with preparing billings change orders for owner
  • Assisting with verification & approval of invoices
  • Assisting with ordering & expediting materials
  • Assisting with quality control & safety management, including inspections, tool box talks, project-specific program review & development, first work inspections and documentation.
  • Assisting with managing subcontracts
  • Assisting with permit process
  • Assisting with performing scheduling, estimating & project management
  • Punchlist & project closeout
  • Cooperating & working with field project management
  • Assisting with developing monthly reports
  • Assisting with site logistics plan development and implementation
  • Verifying and tracking work progress and field productivity
  • And any other duties that may be assigned

Required Skills

Technical Capabilities

You should be familiar with the following software: Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Exchange, etc. 


Required Experience

Basic qualifications for Entry-Level Engineer candidates include:

  • Bachelor of Science in an Engineering discipline, Engineering Technology or Construction Management, Construction Technology.
  • Knowledge of engineering principles.
  • Knowledge of basic business principles sufficient to project and monitor expenses.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite including Word and Excel.
  • Ability to read and understand technical specifications, blueprints, technical manuals, product/material installation instructions and engineering/architectural drawings.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
  • Experience with construction projects, mechanical/electrical systems, building materials, building mechanics or working with craft workers.
