The Director, Commercial Portfolio Management is a high-level management position responsible for overseeing all commercial loan servicing, portfolio management and collections activities on the commercial loan portfolio. This position requires acting on strategic plans and making decisions regarding asset management, risk management and the overall performance of the commercial loan portfolio, while ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations, board polices and credit union management practices. This position is responsible for budgeting activities and shepherding research and development of new processes and tactics to protect credit union assets. The duties performed by this position also include responsibility for partner employees who work in assigned functional areas.

1)      Directs WPCU’s Member Business Services (MBS) portfolio management program and collecting on commercial loans, including developing strategies, tactics, and plans, and achieving overall performance, service, and profitability targets as established by senior management. (15%)

2)      Directs and performs annual financial analysis and risk rating assessment as part of ongoing review of the member business loan portfolio, developing a plan of action when results of a review are substandard and repayment of a debt is questionable. (15%)

3)      Proactively identifies at-risk loan relationships through ongoing portfolio monitoring efforts, including delinquency monitoring, covenant performance, lien and lawsuit monitoring, insurance monitoring and monitoring payment of real estate taxes. Administers loan workouts and asset preservation plans. (10%)

4)      Oversees daily collection activities for commercial loans, including loans to marijuana-related businesses, and reviewing ongoing loan performance and risk. (10%)

5)      Oversees the credit union’s legal collections and bankruptcy work on the commercial loan portfolio, partnering with the WPCU Legal Department to make sure assets are protected and recoveries are maximized. (10%)

6)      Ensures assigned business units are operating efficiently and reliably, are in compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and rules, have appropriate operating controls to mitigate risk, and are performing at a high level. (5%)

7)      Ensures WPCU’s commercial portfolio management and collection functions are operating in a manner that matches the credit union’s three-stakeholder philosophy, proving opportunities for member businesses, providing growth opportunities for Partners, and protecting the credit union’s income opportunities and assets. (5%)

8)      Provides strategic input into business decisions and makes recommendations to senior management based on in-depth understanding of portfolio management collection functions. This includes collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to generate ideas, identify opportunities, execute on approved initiatives, and set appropriate KRIs and KPIs to measure the teams’ performances. (5%)

9)      Prepares comprehensive performance reports for business units, senior management, the board of directors, regulators and for various committee discussions. (5%)

10)   Interacts with regulators and internal and external auditors to successfully complete exams and audits. This includes effectively communicating with and influencing regulators and auditors ensuring they understand products, services, policies, management practices and procedures. (5%)

11)   Identifies and oversees the management and integration of third-party partners to provide a strong service delivery to business members and ensures vendor contractual commitments are met. (5%)

12)   Recruits, supervises, coaches, and regularly reviews the performance of Partners working in MBS portfolio management. (5%)

13)   Other duties as required to support business unit and credit union goals. (5%)


Required Skills

The Director, Commercial Portfolio Management must possess substantial experience and competence in a wide variety of areas which may affect a financial services organization of greater than $9 billion in assets. The following are also required:

1)      A bachelor’s degree in business-related field is required (Masters preferred). Candidates with non-business degrees may qualify with considerable experience in the primary areas of responsibility.

2)      At least five years’ experience in leadership is required and it is helpful if this experience is in retail financial services, commercial lending, portfolio management or collections, including experience managing and leading management level employees.

3)      At least seven years’ experience in commercial loan credit, collections and/or portfolio management financial services.

4)      Proven analytical skills with the ability to read and assess individual and company financial statements, cash flow, industry/competitive analysis and projections, including complicated business structures.

5)      Acute attention to detail is required.

6)      Working knowledge of SBA lending programs, including SBA 7(A), SBA 504, and SBA Express, and how to manage and collect on those loans.

7)      Ability to hold challenging conversations with senior operational and corporate leadership at WPCU and with member businesses.

8)      Proven ability to learn complex or sophisticated concepts and apply appropriate decisions.

9)      Demonstrated desire and ability to perform the job duties of this position.

10)  Entrepreneurial talent to create, develop and execute on product/process development, relationship building, and other opportunities is required.

11)  Outstanding communication skills, including written, verbal and listening skills are required.

12)  Ability to work collaboratively with key internal and external leaders with emphasis on influencing.
