GENERAL SUMMARY

The Academic & Career Specialist at the Viejas Tribal Education Center provides professional academic and career services to the Viejas Tribal community including, but not limited to: college advising, oversight of college applications, career counseling, college retention activities, and increase postsecondary enrollment in college and career training opportunities.

The primary goals of this position is to provide guidance for students in middle school, high school, post-secondary programs, and adults interested in pursuing further education & vocational opportunities

 

CORE SCOPE OF POSITION

 

College Counseling/Advising

  • Partner with schools where Viejas students are enrolled in to ensure students are on track toward graduation and receiving the necessary supports to be successful. Maintain appropriate release forms to obtain information as needed.
  • Support adult learners interested in completing their high school diploma or postsecondary degree
  • Work closely with the Education Director to track student’s progress to ensure students are meeting the requirements set forth by the Tribe’s Education Policies and Procedures
  • Outreach and develop relationships with community colleges, trade schools, and universities to build career and technical pathways for K-12 and post-secondary students.
  • Assist high school seniors with all facets of the college application and financial aid process, ensuring that: Students have applied to a variety of appropriate colleges and parents are involved in the process via group workshops and individual meetings.
  • Coordinate College Boot Camp for graduating high school seniors and College Application workshops for juniors during the summer
  • Works closely with the Tribal Family Services Department for social-emotional needs

Career Advising:

  • Facilitate workshops and one-on-one meetings to support a positive transition into the workforce or post-secondary programs.
  • Provides training to Education Department staff to promote various career opportunities and application processes.
  • Supervise and evaluate a caseload of student internships providing guidance in learning goals and career development assignments
  • Meet with students 1:1 and in groups to help them reflect on their strengths, skills, and experiences, discover, and explore career options, create personalized action plans for their professional development
  • Engage and provide parents information and guidance in the college and financial aid application process
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Be an organizational team player with a willingness to occasionally perform other tasks outside of scope of work, as assigned, in alignment with the needs of the overall organization and the skill set of the individual holding the position.

 

INTERACTION

  • Interacts internally and externally with Tribal Members, students, parents, education administrators and outside agencies.

 

SUPERVISION

  • Does not provide supervisions to others.

Required Skills

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Knowledge of career software and assessment instruments.
  • High-level understanding of electronic media, databases, and standard software tools
  • Has superior written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. A proven passion for, commitment to, and success in working with underrepresented communities including a deep knowledge of and sensitivity to the needs of that population
  • Strong interpersonal skills that forge productive relationships across broad sector lines (students, staff, tribal families, community partners, community leaders, public officials, etc.)
  • Ability to understand student’s maturity levels, goal selection, determining interests and possible career pathways to support students in making choices that leads to appropriate careers provided their interests and abilities
  • Establish good rapport with young adults and serve as positive role model and mentor
  • Ability to engage with parents to helps students succeed
  • The ability to plan and execute measurable results
  • Demonstrated wisdom and thoughtfulness in dealing with challenging and complex issues among competing interests
  • Working knowledge of college and university admissions guidelines standardized testing requirements and application procedures.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks.
  • Ability to problem-solve, make decisions, and manage conflict.

Required Experience

EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum 3 years' experience in college & career advising
  • Equivalent combination of education and progressive, relevant, and direct experience may be considered in lieu of minimum educational/experience requirements indicated above.
  • Familiar with various systems of higher education (CSU, UC, independent, out-of-state, etc.)
  • Familiar with various internship, research, and leadership opportunities
  • Direct experience in managing solutions to address the challenges of under-represented college student populations in college success & career development
