Recovery and Utilization Business Unit Manager

This position is responsible for providing leadership and guidance to the Recovery and Utilities area of the Quinnesec Mill.  This includes but is not limited to the recovery boiler, the package boiler, turbine generators, evaporators, waste water plant, and auxiliary equipment as assigned.  on station, turbine generator, multiple effect evaporators, filtered water plants and Waste Plant, and auxiliary equipment as assigned.  The qualified candidate will ensure that the Recovery and Utilities Department operates safely, efficiently in producing high quality outputs in an environmentally conscious manner

Key Accountabilities:

  • Safety & Environmental – Provide leadership and resources to ensure employee safety and compliance with environment regulations. Lead by example through actions. 
  • Cost – Manage department to continuously evaluate performance versus benchmarks and implement initiatives to close R-Gap.
  • Reliability – Provide leadership and resources to improve equipment reliability through use of systems.
  • Production – Ensure the dependable supply of steam, electricity, compressed air and filtered water to meet the needs of the mill.
  • Engagement – Lead the building of effective work teams. This includes increasing skill level of employees, developing an organization that rapidly accepts and implements change, providing tools and techniques to help teams solve problems, and developing current/future leaders.

Required Skills

  • A track record of success in leading Safety, Quality and Production
  • The ability to engage, empower and motivate the Quinnesec workforce.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with a non-traditional, union-free workforce
  • Strong operational skills with technical background, and customer focus

Required Experience

  • A bachelor’s degree in pulp and paper science, chemical engineering, chemistry, power engineering or related area.


  • Minimum of 5 to 10 supervisory/engineering experience in kraft chemical pulping operations (wood processing, power/utilities, chemical recovery, or fiber lines).
  • Significant consideration will be given to applicable experience in chemical recovery and power operations OR any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Social, leadership, and communication skills to engage key customers and stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with team members throughout an organization, excellent analytical, communication, team leadership skills, planning and priority setting and quality and timely decision making.
