The 911 Dispatcher will support the mission of Valparaiso University and the Valparaiso University Police department by performing the dispatch responsibilities to ensure the safety, security, well-being, and retention of the university’s students, faculty, staff, guests, and university property. Provide 911 and Dispatch services and monitor campus safety devices for the Valparaiso University Community, Valparaiso University Police Department, and other assisting Emergency Agencies.  Applicants must be able to perform all Police 911 and Dispatch duties, tasks, and work straight or rotating shifts.

 

Major Responsibilities:

  • Receives incoming Police Department calls
    • 911 Emergencies
    • Other requests for police assistance
  • Dispatch and relay radio and telephone messages between police officers and the community
  • Monitors, conduct welfare checks, documents movement, and activities of the Safety Officers
  • Operates a National Crime Information Center (NCIC) & Indiana Data and Communications System (IDACS), Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) system, and police radio consoles.
  • Monitors fire, burglar, and other various alarm systems for university buildings
  • Disseminate campus mass emergency notifications
  • Monitors the campus’ closed-circuit camera systems
  • Conducts after hours calls of service, notifications, and assist with contractors for the Facility Maintenance Department; assists IT Department with campus key control, One Card problems, and issue cards to students
  • Responds to questions from walk-in and telephone traffic

 

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Proficient in computer use and the ability to learn new programs
  • Capable of multitasking
  • Customer service oriented
  • Preferred Certified Indiana Data and Communications System (IDACS)
  • Preferred Certified National Crime Information Center (NCIC)
  • Proficient in Computer Aided Dispatch System (CAD)
