The Community Education Project (CEP) at Stetson University is hiring a part-time Academic Success Coordinator to support incarcerated college students at Tomoka Correctional Institution. This role focuses on delivering individualized and group academic support, including tutoring, peer instruction, and success coaching in areas such as time management, test preparation, and active reading. The Coordinator will collaborate with students, faculty, and CEP staff to foster independent learning and academic confidence, while also helping to implement structured support programs that mirror those available on Stetson’s main campus.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Employment duties include, but are not limited to the following:
- Provide individualized and group academic support to students in areas such as time management, test preparation, active reading, note-taking, and study strategies
- Coordinate and implement structured academic support programs, including peer tutoring, success coaching, and skill-building workshops tailored to the prison education context
- Serve as an information resource for CEP students on general academic success practices
- Foster independent learning by helping students build confidence, self-advocacy, and academic resilience
- Collaborate with CEP students, faculty, and staff to align academic support with course expectations and student needs, and to develop personalized academic strategies
- Assist students in developing research skills, locating academic materials, and navigating academic resources
- Maintain accurate and confidential student records and prepare reports on student progress and support activities as needed
- Stay current on best practices in tutoring, academic intervention, and coaching within higher education
- Support CEP faculty and staff with the distribution and collection of course materials and supplies
Required Skills
- Understanding of college-level academic expectations, learning outcomes, and student development theory
- Knowledge of best practices in academic support and student success initiatives
- Understanding of how to locate, evaluate, and use academic resources effectively, including library databases and open-access materials
- Ability to communicate clearly, respectfully, and effectively with diverse student populations, faculty, and staff
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex ideas in accessible ways
- Skilled at managing multiple tasks, tracking student progress, and meeting deadlines
- Capacity to assess student needs and adapt support strategies to meet those needs effectively
- Ability to handle sensitive student information in compliance with FERPA and institutional policies
- Support the University’s Mission and Values in their role
Required Experience
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college in Education, Psychology, Higher Education, Student Affairs, or a related field
- Experience in providing academic support, tutoring, or coaching in a higher education or community-based setting
- Strong commitment to educational equity, social justice, and inclusive learning environments
- Excellent communication and organizational skills
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a unique and evolving educational setting
- Ability to obtain and maintain clearance at the prisons; given the job responsibilities, the person hired to the position must complete background and driving record checks
- Willingness to travel to and work within a correctional facility, following all institutional protocols and procedures; reliable access to transportation is essential

Ideal Candidate Qualifications:
- Experience working with incarcerated or justice-impacted individuals
- Experience with student services
- Written and oral proficiency in Spanish
Work Environment: This position is primarily based at Tomoka Correctional Institution, an incentivized men’s prison in Daytona Beach, Florida. Instruction takes place in a dedicated classroom equipped with standard teaching tools, laptops, and Zoom capabilities (no internet access). The environment supports a focused, college-level learning experience. The specialist will also routinely work in an office setting at Stetson University during normal hours of operation for university offices. This will require some light travel to DeLand campus.
