The Assistant Locksmith performs skilled tasks in the installation and in the diagnosis, maintenance and repair of locks and door hardware. The Assistant Locksmith exercises the use of independent judgment in the evaluation of locking systems and the recommendation of repairs. The Assistant Locksmith assists in maintaining the Keystone database, LinelS2 and GMFS Keybox, and all other hard/soft copy records pertaining to the lock security of the University. This position also assists in electronic access as it pertains to electromechanical and card systems.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Employment duties will include, but not be limited to:
- Assist the University Locksmith and completes work orders as assigned
- Perform preventive maintenance such as inspecting, cleaning, servicing and lubricating all forms of locks and door hardware; surface mounted and concealed rod panic and exit devices, door closers both mechanical and electromechanical; brands include but are not limited to Stanley, BEST, Schlage, Corbin /Russwin and LCN, Von Duprin, Dorma/KABA, Adams Rite, Cal-Royal, Hager, Rixson and the like. This requires the ability to stand, walk, crouch, bend, reach, and have dexterity with arms and hands. Must be able to climb ladders.
- Perform repairs and replacements of locks including cylindrical sets, mortised sets, tubular deadbolts, surface mounted latches and the like
- Diagnose problems, identify solutions, and correct, or refer problem to Supervisor for action, and keep constituents informed in a timely manner
- Cut and issue keys per approved requests for key issuance and retrieval; keep Keystone database fully up to date with all keys issued and retrieved
- Work with Human Resources and Public Safety in the retrieval of keys and the access of areas by groups of individuals
- Maintain records of key requests and agreements as it pertains to employee status, while staying consistent with the University Key and Access Control Policy
- Rekey locks including recombinating cores and swapping out interchangeable cores; this requires fine motor skills and dexterity with hands and fingers, as well as good eyesight to see very small parts
- Perform necessary repairs and replacements of all form of door hardware, including mechanical and electromechanical overhead and concealed door closers, center mullions and surface mounted panic hardware, concealed and surface vertical rod exit devices and related cylinders
- Manage all combinations in conjunction with digital combination locks; maintain and track all combinations currently in use and recently replaced, installing new units and the rebuilding and repair of used
- Assist with oversight of the LenelS2 electronic access system; troubleshoot and repair problems; assign access and deactivate access as requested and approved
- May coordinate with and assist in managing vendors for repairs and installation
- Assist with maintaining the Lock Shop, and all equipment, door hardware, locks, cylinders, keys, key combinations and codes and control records
- Perform preventive building maintenance tasks such as replacing filters, cleaning air conditioning coils, lubricating moving parts, and performing regular inspections of mechanical equipment and general components of the building interior and exterior
- Perform general building maintenance tasks such as replacing light bulbs, minor plumbing and electrical repairs, troubleshooting HVAC problems, painting, replacing ceiling tiles, repairing roofing, repairing flooring, repairing and adjusting furniture, or other similar activities; this requires the use of step-stools or ladders to reach ceilings and requires the use of hand tools and power tools
- Effectively plan and perform in a multi-task environment and successfully meets objectives and deadlines; exercise the use of good judgment
- May work occasional evenings and weekends to accomplish work that cannot be completed during normal working hours; may be required to work overtime during “all hands” events such as move-in weekend, graduation, and the like
- Performs special and other assignments as directed
Required Skills
- Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions in English and to perform routine locksmith and maintenance duties without immediate supervision
- Possess practical experience and knowledge in the proper methods and practices of lock and hardware repair and installation
- Ability to effectively plan and coordinate multi-task requirements and meet self and pre-imposed objectives and deadlines
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, students and the university community
- Ability to use hand and power tools applicable to the trade
- Ability to walk long distances and climb stairs; many buildings have multiple floors with stairs and no elevators
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to work in indoor or outdoor environments with extreme temperature and humidity common in Florida and may work in buildings without air conditioning, heating, or other comforts; may work in areas that are dusty, noisy, and areas that may have unpleasant odors
- Ability to use computer software; experience using Keystone and LenelS2 software, or able to quickly learn
- Ability to use spreadsheet and word processing software
- Ability to respond to emails, text messages, and phone calls in a professional manner
Required Experience
- Minimum high school diploma or GED, supplemented by continuing education / vocational training courses in locksmithing
- Three (3) years hands-on experience in the locksmith trade, including in the operation and diagnosis, maintenance and repair of locking mechanisms and associated door hardware

Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record as determined by the University’s auto insurance carrier.
Ideal Candidate Qualifications:
- Registered Locksmith and ability to become Certified Registered Locksmith
- Experience in maintaining key and lock control (locking equipment, door hardware, locks, cylinders, keys, key combinations and codes and control records) for a multi-building complex
