Specific Job Title: Coordinator of Public Safety Operations  

Reports to: Associate Director of Parking and StormCard Operations   

Campus: Queens  

 

Job Summary:

The Coordinator of Public Safety Operations is responsible for student worker training, maintenance, and any associated troubleshooting required for the campus StormCard, Parking, and Resident Safety programs. Duties include maintaining the Operations Center and keeping all the components of StormCard and parking in order; monitoring and processing the revenue collections from parking and  StormCard; and assisting with access control troubleshooting and maintenance. Adjudication of parking summons is required. Tour and RDO changes may be required to accommodate the needs of the departmentOvertime will be granted at the discretion of management, some of which is mandatory.  

Furthermore, this position is responsible for staffing and providing supervision to the Resident Village’s student worker staff, known as Resident Safety Monitors (RSMs). The individual in this position ensures adequate staffing by managing the recruiting process, providing training, managing performance, and supporting the students’ professional growth. They will routinely work with Patrol Sergeants, Resident Village Public Safety Officers, and Per Diems. To ensure resident safety and security, this position also collaborates closely with Student Life, Residence Life, Conference Services, Student Conduct, and the IT department (among others) on all matters. The individual in this position is accountable for student worker budget and payroll management. As a member of the department’s management team, this individual will engage in various community-oriented public safety activities including training, presentations, etc. This position requires a 12-month, 365 days/year commitment to the needs of the resident village and maintenance of the student worker budget and adequate staffing levels  

The Coordinator of Public Safety Operations will also:  

  • Ensure that student workers are afforded opportunities for success in academic and professional growth via collaboration with the Assoc. Director of Parking and StormCard Operations as well as the Director of Operations. 

  • Oversee the recruitment, recognition, and retention of the best student workers and monitor student worker satisfaction. 

  • Create, monitor, and report all scheduling and budgetary goals. 

  • Monitor and review the integrity of the Overnight Guest, StormCard, and Parking programs, on a daily basis. 

  • Communicate daily with upper management to ensure that problematic issues are addressed immediately 

  • Develop effective and innovative initiatives to address the Operations Center and Resident Hall’s climate with respect to student success and retention.  

  • Assist in training student worker staff to become familiar with all StormCard-related and parking program production, procedure, and policy.   

  

Essential Functions:  

  • Manage and maintain the appearance and equipment inside the Operations Center

  • Delegate the work within the operations center to the student worker staff and follow up to ensure we maintain the caliber of customer service skills the University is asking the Department of Public Safety to provide to the University Community 24/7 

  • Aid with recruitment and scheduling of student worker staff

  • Perform and familiarize with all card-related and Parking program-related production, procedure, and policy

  • Stay abreast of breaking technology and troubleshoot associated hardware, software, and card problems.  

  • Conduct and monitor training of staff and student workers and maintain manuals  

  • Supervise student workers and model high customer service skill set   

  • Help customers in a professional manner by providing accurate information, working to resolve disputes, and acting as a liaison with other University Departments  

  • Supports access control troubleshooting and maintenance

  • Maintain, monitor, and create daily electronic and hard copy inventory record-keeping logs as necessary   

  • Assure quality and accuracy with appropriate audits

  • Manage the daily performance of the Resident Safety Monitors (RSMs) and be on-call to ensure Public Safety’s security, staffing, and safety protocols are followed   

  • Access student worker staffing needs   

  • Collaborate closely with Human Resources’ Student Employment Manager and Employment Specialist to facilitate student worker interviews  

  • Conduct interviews while referencing the Student Worker Interview Guide, On-Campus Student Employment Performance Management and Mentoring Checklist, Core Competencies, Objectives, and Career Development   

  • Manage training logistics including location, training material, appropriate AV, etc 

  • Support inter-department training efforts by teaching additional instruction as necessary. Responsible for Human Resources New Student Worker Orientation for all new members of the student worker staff   

  • Oversee and ensure all RSMs are properly trained, uniformed, and supervised; initiates disciplinary action when required   

  • Ensure building occupancy rosters, guide materials, and supply logs are kept up to date and in adequate inventory  

  • Record and monitor all Lenel and visitation applications and CCTV cameras; confers with IT when directed   

  • Update policy and procedure when necessary  

  • Assist in investigations and reporting as necessary  

  • Oversee the daily scheduling and budget management of Resident Safety Monitors. 

  • Collaborate closely with Business Affairs and the Office of Financial Services to maintain strict budgetary guidelines  

  • Handle bi-weekly department budget reports and financial projections  

  • Consistently manage, track, and adjust work hours as needed for work study and regular students while budgeting, planning, and forecasting  

  • Engage in payroll management and approval for approximately 100 student workers  

  • Manage daily payroll attendance to ensure payroll records are accurate  

  • Maintain databases which include, but are not limited to, attendance tracking, sick reports, and shift coverage/exchange requests  

  • Be responsible for the maintenance and accurate accounting of the Campus Security Authority (CSA) database  

  • Attend supervisory staff meetings as directed  

  • Perform other duties as assigned

Supervise Graduate Assistants and Student Workers 

 

Work Environment:  

This position operates in a professional office environment; this position requires you to use standard office equipment such as personal computers, printers, etc.  

 

Physical Demands:  

While performing the duties of this job, the employee must occasionally stand, move about, sit, carry work, and use controls, reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, and communicate. The employee must occasionally lift or move up to 50 lbs.   

 

Environmental Conditions:  

This position operates in a professional office environment; this position is required to use standard office equipment such as personal computers, printers, etc.  Must be able to work during emergencies, including pandemics, active shooter, etc. 

 

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

Full-time, Monday through Friday, 08:00 AM to 04:00 PM; overtime on an as-needed basis. 

 

Travel:

Travel is primarily local and may include visits to the other NY campuses; some travel is out-of-area, and overnight travel may be required.  

 

Required Education and Experience: 

  • AA or AS Degree  

  • One to two years of related experience  

  • Substantial customer service skills   

  • Above-average computer literacy  

  • Working knowledge of database programs, word processing, EXCEL, PowerPoint, and ACCESS; training experience with presentation skills  

  • Position requires great flexibility with working hours and extended duties as demands arise  

  • Must be able to multi-task and resolve parking adjudications and customer complaints  

  • Experience working in a customer service function  

  • Experience in safety or security of a Higher Ed or educational institution

In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual salary range for this position is $55,000-$60,000.
