Assistant Professor

 

Full-time one-year contract (non-tenure track) faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science of St. John’s University.

Department Information

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science offers several programs: BS and BA in Mathematics, BS in Computing and Machine Learning, BS in Financial Mathematics, MA in Applied Mathematics, Computing, and Machine Learning, and MS in Computational Biology and Biostatistics.

Many of our faculty use our convenient location to participate in the numerous seminars in the area via public transportation, such as at NYU, Columbia University, the CUNY Graduate Center, and the Simons Foundation. Responsibilities

The main responsibility for this position is teaching 12 credits per fall and spring semesters. The courses will be determined by the needs of the department. The usual needs are: Calculus, Statistics, Mathematics for Liberal Arts, and introductory courses in Data Science and Machine Learning (see courses CSC 1030, CSC 1380, MTH 1000, MTH 1100, MTH 1020, MTH 1210, MTH 1220, MTH 1250, MTH 1260, MTH 1320 in https://www.stjohns.edu/academics/schools-and-colleges/bulletins/undergraduate-bulletin). Related duties include holding office hours, participating in teaching-related meetings, and other activities needed for student recruitment and success.

Qualifications

Applicants should possess a PhD in Mathematics, Computer Science, Education, or a closely related field. Preference will be given to candidates with evidence of teaching experience in Mathematics and Computer Science. This is a one-year contract position (September 1, 2025 – June 30, 2026) with the possibility of renewal for the next academic year. High quality teaching is essential for renewal of the position in subsequent years. Candidates who have an active research agenda in Mathematics or Computer Science may be considered for a tenure-track position if one becomes available.

In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual salary range for this position is $72,100 - $79,200 St. John’s University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
