Specific Job Title: Associate Director, Training & Development 

  

Reports to: Director of Employee Experience

Job Summary:  

St. John’s University Human Resources Department is seeking an Associate Director to lead our Training and Development team and efforts. As the Associate Director of Training and Development, you will play a pivotal role in the growth and success of the University by overseeing the design, development, and implementation of training programs and initiatives. You will be responsible for creating and maintaining a dynamic learning environment that empowers employees to develop the skills and knowledge needed to excel in their roles. This role requires a blend of leadership, instructional design, presentation skills, and organizational development expertise. 

 

Essential Functions:

Training Program Development: 

  • Design, develop, and deliver training programs (in both a virtual and in-person format), workshops, and materials, including onboarding, professional development, and leadership development. 

  • Maintain strong communication with department heads and employees to understand evolving training needs and gather feedback. 

  • Collaborate with senior leadership to identify the University training needs and objectives. 

  • Partner with departments across the University and build custom training as needed. 

Instructional Design: 

  • Develop and maintain training curriculum, ensuring that content is engaging, relevant, and up-to-date. 

  • Incorporate adult learning principles and best practices into training design. 

  • Utilize various instructional methods, including e-learning, instructor-led training, and blended learning. 

  • Partner with external organizations and industry experts to enrich training offerings. 

Team Leadership: 

  • Supervise and manage the Training and Development Assistant as well as the Employee Experience Assistant for the team’s needs. 

  • Provide guidance, support, and coaching to team members to ensure their professional development. 

  • Collaborate with various departments across the University, HR, and other relevant stakeholders to ensure training programs are aligned with institutional goals.  

Learning Technology: 

  • Identify and implement innovative learning technologies to enhance training efficiency and effectiveness. 

  • Oversee the implementation of learning management systems (LMS) and other tools as needed. 

  • Ability to utilize online software development tools, such as Articulate 360. 

Assessment and Evaluation: 

  • Develop metrics and key performance indicators (KPIs) to evaluate the effectiveness of training programs. 

  • Continuously analyze and improve training programs based on feedback and performance data. 

  • Conduct regular needs assessments to identify skill gaps and training requirements. 

Compliance and Reporting: 

  • Ensure training programs meet regulatory compliance and industry standards. 

  • Generate reports and present training-related data to senior management as required. 

Strategic Planning: 

  • Support change management initiatives by creating training programs that aid in the adoption of new processes or technologies. 

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive training and development strategy aligned with the University’s goals and objectives. 

  • Identify emerging trends and best practices in education and training.  

Talent Development: 

  • Collaborate with HR Services to identify high-potential employees and develop career development plans. 

  • Provide guidance on employees’ career paths and skill development. 

 

Competencies: 

  • Exceptional project management and organizational skills. 

  • Strong understanding of adult learning theories, instructional design, and training methodologies. 

  • Proficiency in learning management systems and other training-related software. 

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills. 

  • Leadership and team management experience.  

  • Familiarity with regulatory compliance and industry standards relevant to the education sector. 

  • Attention to detail, accuracy, and the ability to prioritize multiple tasks simultaneously. 

  • Ability to facilitate content across the University simultaneously in a classroom setting and virtually. 

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Knowledge of Canvas and Banner is a plus. 

 

Work Environment: 

This position operates in a professional office environment. This position requires you to use standard office equipment such as personal computers, printers, etc. 

 

Physical Demands: 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee must occasionally stand, move about, sit, carry work, use controls, reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, communicate, and must be able to move tables on wheels and chairs in a training setting. 

 

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work: 

This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. This role may be eligible for hybrid/remote work 1-2 days per week after a 3-month orientation period, with the understanding that the person in role will be required to report to campus for trainings, workshops, and other work-related meetings or events as determined by business needs or other circumstances. 

 

Education and Experience:  

  • Bachelor’s degree in training and development, Human Resources, Business, or related field required; master’s degree is a plus. 

  • 5-7 years’ professional experience in training and development, including leadership roles required. Professional experience in the education sector a plus

In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual/hourly salary range for this position is $110,600. St. John’s University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.

 

This position may be relocated to any of St. John’s University’s physical locations at any time.
