Specific Job Title: Assistant Director of Campus Recreation 

Reports to: Director of Campus Recreation 

Campus: Queens 

 

Job Summary:  

Reporting to the Director of Campus Recreation, the Assistant Director of Campus Recreation will assist in the administration and management of operational and programming aspects of a comprehensive fitness and intramural program. The incumbent will handle the planning, organization, scheduling, supervision, and evaluation of all intramural leagues and club sports. This individual will also be the point person for all club sports coaches/captains. This individual will oversee budgeting for intramural and club sports and graduate assistants for intramurals and fitness, student staff, and per diem officials/referees 

Campus Recreation is part of the Division of Student Success. The Assistant Director will collaborate with colleagues across the Division and the university to provide students with excellent extracurricular experiences and opportunities to meet health and fitness goals. This position primarily involves hours in the evening (4:30 pm-11 pm). Main responsibilities include intramural sport league and event planning, recruitment and training of student officials and event managers, sport club oversight and administration, guidance for sport club executive boards, and evaluation of risk and management of sport programs. 

 

Essential Functions:

  • Oversee and supervise the day-to-day operations and programming of Campus Recreation, including Fitness, Intramurals, and Club Sports.  

  • Create a robust intramural calendar that provides extensive and exciting intramural sports offerings that best meet the needs of our students, research aspirants, and peer institutions for new ideas. 

  • Hire and train all staff and officials on proper sports rules based on NIRSA rules, regulations, and recommendations: 

    • Work with Athletics to secure shared field space for Intramural activities 
    • Schedule all intramural leagues, tournaments, and related staff. 
    • Track and report league standings and relevant statistics. 
    • Accurately track all department equipment and accessories, assist with the storage and maintenance of equipment, and provide recommendations for new equipment ordering. 
    • Prepare, review, and make available rules for each activity offered in the intramural programs based on NIRSA rules, regulations, and policies. 
    • Assist in the development of the annual budget preparation for intramurals and have authority over budget decisions regarding intramural-related spending. 
    • Conduct sport officials training, recruitment, and retention efforts for all intramural sport leagues and tournaments. 
    • Evaluate intramural programs and make recommendations each semester and annually based on student interest and needs. 
    • Coordinate outdoor open recreation activities, including volleyball, soccer, Frisbee, and more, during each semester. 
    • Serve as primary advisor to all sports clubs and assist them with scheduling, budgeting, transportation, and all other necessary administrative work. 
    • Development and implementation of program policies and procedures for the safety and operation of sport club teams, and the Sport Club program. 
    • Track all club sport participation and prepare an annual report based on these programs.  
    • Prepare and report a season summary of all awards and records for the team and individual players. 
    • Maintain inventory of all intramural sports and sport club equipment and supplies, including recommendations for new/replacement equipment and supplies. 
  • Assist with Campus Recreation social media development and execution. 
  • Provide guidance and sport-related needs to various student organizations and departments requesting Campus Recreation services 
  • Assist in maintaining intramural sports and sport club assessment data for reporting to the Director of Campus Recreation 
  • Prepare, review, and submit reports as needed. 
  • Assist with the development and implementation of a comprehensive employee-training program for all employees 
  • Serve as a member of campus and University committees (as assigned).  
  • Develop and maintain appropriate professional relationships with the University community, including faculty members, administrators, staff members, and students. 
  • Engage in cross-departmental projects to support the strategic initiatives of the Division of Student Success. 
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by the Director of Campus Recreation. 

 

Competencies: 

  • Demonstrated organizational and time management skills. 

  • Ability to think critically and present information is essential.  

  • Proficiency in MS Office.  

  • Ability to travel and work non-traditional hours if needed.  

  • Work experience within a collegiate setting is preferred. 

  • Basic supervisory skills. 

 

Supervisory Responsibility: 

Supervises four graduate assistants and fifty to sixty student workers, including intramural student supervisors, assistants, and officials. 

 

Work Environment: 

This position operates in a professional office environment. This position requires the use of standard office equipment such as personal computers, printers, etc. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand, move about, sit, carry work and use controls, reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, and communicate. The employee must occasionally lift or move up to 50 lbs.  

 

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work: 

This position is full-time and requires weekday evenings and weekend hours.  

 

Travel: 

Travel is primarily local and may include visits to the other NY campuses. 

 

Required Education and Experience:  

  • Bachelor’s degree in Recreation, Physical Education, Sports Management, or a related field required with three to five years of professional experience with campus recreation, intramural or sport league programming in the college or private recreation field. 

  • Sports officiating and coaching experience is required at either the high school or college level. 

  • Certifications: First Aid, CPR, and AED certifications or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment. 

  • Nationally recognized NIRSA certification or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment.

In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual salary for this position is $64,350. This position may be relocated to any of St. John’s University’s physical locations at any time.
