Department: LGBTQ+ Center, Office for Equity and Inclusion 

Specific Job Title: Director, LGBTQ+ Center 

Reports to: Vice President, Equity and Inclusion 

Campus: Queens 

 

Job Summary:  

This position reports to the Vice President of Equity and Inclusion and helps provide leadership along with management of the center and staff. General duties also include overseeing LGBTQ+ Center programming, managing daily operations, coordinating with university units to assess stakeholder needs, staffing and supervising student staff, and organizing and managing Center resources. 

 

Essential Functions: 

  • Provide a coherent vision and direction for the LGBTQ+ Center in partnership with the other areas within OEI, the Office of Student Success, Human Resources, the Office of the Provost, Director of the Institute for Critical Race and Ethnic Studies, and other university structures and in accordance with the University’s mission and vision. 

  • Work with the Director and the Office of Multicultural Affairs on the creation, development, and implementation of programming, including workshops, performances, and panels. 

  • Serve as a project manager over programming taking place in the Center, including managing an activities calendar and coordinating reservation of facilities, as well as promoting events to internal and external communities. 

  • Supervise, train, coach, and evaluate any assigned Graduate Assistant(s), Doctoral Fellow(s), Arts Center work-study students, and/or support staff as needed. 

  • Lead the administrative tasks for the implementation of the Center’s goals as well as programmatic goals to fulfill the vision for the development of the Center.  

  • Interact with various departments and individuals to coordinate activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems. 

  • Prepare all formal and informal performance reports for organization, institutional, and assessment purposes. 

  • Maintain accurate records pertaining to the Center’s budget and executing payment tasks including check, purchase, and budget transfers, EPCF/EPAF, CONCUR. 

  • Lead the coordination of special programs and events, including attending occasional evening and weekend functions.  

  • Engage in special projects including but not limited data collection, as well as equity and inclusion strategic directives and objectives. 

  • Ensure that all relevant University policies and procedures are followed by the Center.

Competencies: 

Bachelor’s degree required or equivalent experience; A minimum of five to seven years of experience in higher education, management or program coordination experience is preferred; strong knowledge of diversity equity and inclusion leadership development: demonstrated understanding and embracing of diverse social identity groups; strong understanding of cultural competency and current LGBTQ+ issues; excellent written and oral communication skills; detail-oriented; demonstrated project management skills; strong oral and written communication skills; innovative/strategic thinker; demonstrated leadership, and supervision skills; and demonstrated competency with multi-taking, self-initiating, and working cooperatively. 

 

Supervisory Responsibility: 

This position manages the hiring and performance management of the Graduate Assistant(s) and Doctoral Fellow(s) within the department, and the training and development of hourly and student leaders who support the LGBTQ+ Center’s projects and duties. 

 

Work Environment: 

This position operates in a professional office environment; This position is required to use standard office equipment such as computers, printers, etc.  

 

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work: 

This full-time position is located onsite at St. John’s University, Queens campus, Monday through Friday. 

 

Required Education and Experience:  

  • Bachelor’s degree required. 

  • Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in higher education, management, or program coordination experience  

  • Experience supporting historically underrepresented groups is highly desirable. 

  • Intermediate level proficiency of Microsoft Office and Microsoft 365. 

 

Preferred Education and Experience: 

  • Experience with student supervision. 

  • Demonstrated knowledge of diversity equity and inclusion leadership development. 

  • Strong understanding and embracing of diverse social identity groups and current LGBTQ+ issues. 

  • Experience with navigating or educating about cultural competency/LGBTQ+ issues, strong cultural sensitivity; especially toward gender, sex, and ethnically minoritized groups. 

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills. 

  • Working with faculty in higher education. 

  • Obtained DEI training/certification.

In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual salary range for this position is $72,700 - $81,800. St. John’s University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.  

 

This position may be relocated to any of St. John’s University’s physical locations at any time.
